AFCON Fever Grips Nation: Super Eagles Prepare for Morocco Semi-Final Clash!

On Wednesday night in Rabat, the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, a 70,000-capacity arena, is set to be the stage for a highly anticipated semi-final clash in the Africa Cup of Nations 2025. Nigeria’s Super Eagles, riding a wave of momentum, will confront tournament hosts Morocco, both sides arriving unbeaten in the competition. This encounter is not merely a semi-final but a pivotal moment in Nigeria's campaign, which has already been marked by numerous milestones and records.
The Super Eagles' journey through AFCON 2025 has been historic. For the second consecutive Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria finds itself facing the tournament hosts, reminiscent of their encounters with Côte d’Ivoire in the 2023 edition where they secured a group stage victory before a final defeat. Now, Morocco stands as the formidable barrier to redemption on hostile ground. Nigeria has also demonstrated unprecedented goal-scoring prowess, netting at least two goals in each of their five matches – a first in the nation’s AFCON history. With 14 goals already, they have set their highest-ever goals tally in a single AFCON edition. Furthermore, the Super Eagles have won five consecutive AFCON matches for the first time ever, showcasing tactical control and mental fortitude. In the expanded 24-team AFCON format, Nigeria has reached the semi-finals three times (2019, 2023, 2025), a feat shared only with Senegal. A victory against Morocco would propel them into their ninth AFCON final, marking their second consecutive final appearance for the first time since the 1988 and 1990 tournaments, bringing history within reach.
At the forefront of Nigeria’s attacking surge is Victor Osimhen, whose impact has been transformative. The Galatasaray forward has scored four goals at AFCON 2025, the highest by a Nigerian in the tournament since Odion Ighalo’s five in 2019. Beyond goals, Osimhen boasts 10 goal involvements (five goals, five assists) in the Africa Cup of Nations. In knockout stages, he has delivered three goals in this edition alone, making him only the fifth Nigerian to achieve this. Crucially, Nigeria has never lost an AFCON match in which Osimhen has either scored or assisted, recording five wins and two draws. This semi-final also presents a significant individual milestone for Osimhen, as two goals against the Atlas Lions would place him at par with Nigeria’s revered 'goalsfather' Rashidi Yekini, who netted 37 times in 58 matches. Osimhen, currently with 35 goals in 51 matches at just 27, is widely tipped to surpass this record. His early international recognition came in 2015 as the top scorer and second most valuable player in the FIFA U17 World Cup, which Nigeria won.
Complementing Osimhen's impact, Ademola Lookman has been highlighted by former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh as Nigeria’s most important player in the tournament. Oliseh lauded Lookman’s forward-focused approach, noting his consistent drive to play the ball forward. Lookman has contributed significantly with three goals and four assists for Eric Chelle’s side. Midfielder Alex Iwobi has also been an extraordinary performer, crediting the team's strong
