AFCON Aftermath: Super Eagles Stars Shine, But Osimhen's 'Indiscipline' Sparks Debate!

The TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 ended with Nigeria securing third place, but discussion over their semifinal loss continues. Former Super Eagles Captain Sunday Oliseh publicly attributed Nigeria’s failure to clinch the AFCON title to what he described as “indiscipline” from star striker Victor Osimhen. Oliseh argued that individual excesses disrupted team unity at a crucial stage of the tournament, specifically citing Osimhen’s public confrontation with teammate Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s 4–0 Round of 16 win over Mozambique.
Public Spat’s Impact on Team Chemistry
On his YouTube channel, Oliseh detailed how Osimhen’s apparent rebuke of Lookman—criticizing him for not releasing the ball in an attacking play—created a toxic environment that hindered the squad’s cohesion. According to Oliseh, the incident had lasting repercussions, with Lookman’s form noticeably declining after the Round of 16 clash, which diminished Nigeria’s attacking threat, particularly in the semifinal.
Oliseh remarked, “Let’s look at the toxicity that might have cost us the AFCON title. We are confusing talent with licence. Victor Osimhen is world-class, but talent is not a license to destroy team chemistry.” He continued, “Look at the evidence. Since that public outburst against Ademola Lookman, one of our brightest lights, he became a shadow of himself, and we lost our bite. When you publicly diminish your teammates, you break their spirit.”
Oliseh further contended that Lookman had been “the most dangerous player in the tournament until that verbal abuse broke his focus,” suggesting Nigeria lost “the psychological edge needed to win” against a disciplined Moroccan side.
Critique Extends Beyond Players
Oliseh’s critique went beyond the squad, extending to a fan culture that, in his view, tolerates such behavior. He highlighted the broader consequences of allowing individual misconduct to go unchecked, arguing it reinforces negative patterns within the team and undermines collective discipline, which is essential for championship success.
