AFCON 2025 Star Set for Blockbuster Transfer Deal Out of Croatia
Nigerian international Salim Fago Lawal is reportedly on the verge of a high-profile transfer from Croatian side NK Istra 1961, following strong interest from a well-funded Central European club. Reports from Croatia indicate that negotiations are at an advanced stage, with a deal expected to be completed in the coming days. The potential transfer fee for the 23-year-old forward, who joined Istra just 18 months ago, is anticipated to exceed €2 million.
While the buying club has not been officially confirmed, Transfermarkt suggests that Azerbaijani champions Qarabağ FK are the likely suitors. Qarabağ, who recently defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League, have demonstrated both ambition and financial capacity, aligning with their reported interest in young, high-upside attackers like Lawal.
Standout Performances in Croatia
Lawal has emerged as one of the league’s standout performers this season, scoring five league goals and providing two assists in 17 appearances for Istra, along with two goals in two Croatian Cup matches. His combination of pace, direct running, and composure in front of goal has made him a highly sought-after talent.
The forward’s international experience has further sharpened his abilities. He featured for Nigeria in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, making his senior debut in a pre-tournament friendly against Egypt. Lawal was the third youngest player in the Super Eagles squad and played in the group-stage win over Uganda. Nigeria eventually secured bronze, defeating Egypt in the third-place play-off. Upon returning to Croatia, Lawal scored in NK Istra’s 2-1 defeat to Rijeka, highlighting his growth and readiness for the next stage of his career.
Rapid Rise from Nigerian Academy to Europe
Lawal’s career trajectory has been remarkably swift. He moved directly from Mavlon FC, a Nigerian academy side, to NK Istra in August 2023, and within a short period has become one of the most promising young forwards in Europe. This imminent transfer to a club like Qarabağ represents a logical next step in a career defined by rapid progression, growing international exposure, and consistent goal-scoring impact.
