During the protests, Denno showed up in plain clothes, walking alongside demonstrators instead of taking the usual position as a cop.
He also captured footage of the protests, which he later shared on his social media platforms.
In a recent interview, Denno said that two days after the protests, he was going about errands with his cousin when some unknown men approached him.
He said they asked to speak with him and led him to a Subaru vehicle. Although he initially complied, he began to fear for his life and decided to flee, but they caught up with him shortly after.
Denno said he was taken to the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road, where he was interrogated for hours over his participation in the protests.
“They were asking me what time I went out for the protests, and if I had information about those who were looting or destroying property,” he said.
After the intense questioning, Denno was released. He claimed that the officers confiscated his phone and ordered him to report back on Monday, June 30, after which he spoke to the media again.
“Hawajaniambia makosa yangu. They were asking me why I went for the protests and I was asking them, if a police officer is on leave, can they really go out to arrest somebody?
"They have not returned my phone and they have told me to return on Wednesday. I have tried pleading with them, telling them that phone is how I run my day to day, even cash transactions, but they have refused,” he said.
Denno rose to fame for his engagement with young people in Nairobi, which he shared through social media.
He was later transferred to Garissa County, and at the time of the protests, he confirmed he was officially on leave.
