According to his family, the transaction in question was reportedly initiated by a third party and deposited into Aina’s account.

The Nigerian Police Headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos State, has released 19-year-old Point of Sale (POS) attendant, Gafar Oluwaseun Babalola, days after he was arrested in connection with a suspicious transaction involving his employer’s account.

Gafar, a recent secondary school graduate, was working for a POS business owner identified as Abimbola Aina in the Iyana School area of Iba, Lagos, when he was arrested.

According to his family, the transaction in question was reportedly initiated by a third party and deposited into Aina’s account. Despite this, Gafar was detained by the police.

Family members who spoke to SaharaReporters on Tuesday said the young man was freed following the intervention of the Lagos State Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC), Ayoyinka Oni, and the Lagos State Coordinator of the Take-It-Back (TIB) Movement, Adekunle Adeyemi Taofeek.

“They told us to come back on Thursday,” a family member said, adding, “But as I'm speaking to you, they have released him courtesy of AAC and TIB. The police asked us to stand in for him and put down our home address.”

The family insists that Gafar was innocent and had no knowledge of the transaction.

“Gafar knows nothing about the whole situation,” the source added. “He was only serving Abimbola, who owns the POS account.”

SaharaReporters previously reported that the police had detained Gafar and allegedly threatened his family over their decision to report the matter to SaharaReporters.

Gafar, a recent secondary school graduate, was working for a POS business owner identified as Abimbola Aina in the Iyana School area of Iba, Lagos, when he was arrested in connection with a suspicious transaction.

The transaction, according to family members, was reportedly initiated by a third party and deposited into Aina’s account—yet police arrested and detained Gafar instead.

Despite the police releasing Abimbola without charge, Gafar was kept in custody.

After releasing Aina, they instructed Gafar's family to provide two sureties to stand for their son, even though the transaction had not been made on his account.
