Adventure Comes Out of the Blue in New Smurfs Trailer

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

Theaters around the world are about to see blue again. Paramount has released a new trailer for its upcoming live-action/animated Smurfs reboot.

This continues in the latest trailer, which spends the first several seconds showing footage of Rihanna in the recording booth. (in what is now an overused trope for this franchise), and the snooterpoots (a Minions-level cute and small creature) making their debut.

The official synopsis for Smurfs reads as follows: "When Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette (Rihanna) leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe."

The Smurfs movies have never had any difficulty landing high-profile actors to voice the lovable blue creatures, and Paramount's reboot is no different, with Rihanna being joined by several recognizable voices, like Parks & Rec alum Nick Offerman (as Papa Smurf's brother Ken) and former The Late Late Show host James Corden as No Name Smurf. Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, and Kurt Russell round out the ensemble voice cast, with John Goodman as Papa Smurf and JP Karliak in a dual role as Gargamel and his brother Razamel.

Smurfs was helmed by Chris Miller, who previously directed the DreamWorks Animation movies Shrek the Third and Puss in Boots, which are both part of the studio's Shrek franchise. The script was written by Pam Brady, whose credits include South Park and Lady Dynamite.

New 'Aang: The Last Airbender' Avatar Movie Finally Gets First Official Look Next Month

The first look at the new animated Avatar: The Last Airbender movie arrives next month, offering a glimpse at Aang’s return.

Smurfs will be the fourth American-made movie featuring the titular blue cartoon characters, who were created by the acclaimed Belgian artist Peyo and first appeared as Les Schtroumpfs in the pages of Spirou magazine. The first two movies, like the upcoming reboot, combined CG animation with live-action, with How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris leading the human cast while Katy Perry voiced Smurfette. Released in 2011, The Smurfs was a major box office hit, grossing over $560 million worldwide, but a miss with critics, earning a rough 21% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A sequel to 2011's The Smurfs was released in 2013, but failed to match the box office (or reception) of its predecessor, leading distributor Sony to reboot the franchise with the fully-animated Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017. Continuing the trend of having well-known singers voicing Smurfette, former Disney Channel star Demi Lovato stepped into the role. Unfortunately, The Lost Village was an even bigger flop at the box office, earning less than $200 million worldwide. On the upside, the 2017 movie earned the best reviews yet for American-made Smurfs movies, with an RT critics' score of 40%.
