Adobe Integrates OpenAI and Google AI Models into Firefly App

Adobe is expanding its Firefly app by integrating AI image-generation models from OpenAI and Google, while also making the app accessible on mobile devices. This update allows users to explore a variety of AI models, including Google Imagen 3 and OpenAI's ChatGPT, alongside Adobe's own Firefly. Adobe emphasizes that Firefly ensures commercial safety, while these integrations cater to users seeking broader creative options for ideation and experimentation.
Since 2023, Adobe has been developing its own AI models within the Firefly service to generate both images and video clips. The company has assured its customers that they will not face legal repercussions for using content created by these models. Last year, Adobe signaled its openness to incorporating third-party models, such as those from OpenAI, into its platform. Now, Firefly users can generate images using OpenAI's GPT image generation, Google Imagen 3, Google Veo 2, and Flux 1.1 Pro, in addition to a new version of Adobe's proprietary Firefly image model. The company also plans to introduce models from partners including fal.ai, Luma, and Runway in the coming months.
Ely Greenfield, Adobe's chief technology officer for digital media, explained that while many customers will continue to use Firefly for its commercial safety, others are interested in experimenting with different models for tasks like ideation. Adobe is making this choice available to them, allowing users to generate content with third-party models in Firefly and seamlessly transfer it to other Adobe applications like Photoshop. Users will be able to pay for these third-party models using the same credit system they use for Adobe's AI models. However, Adobe has not disclosed the revenue split between itself and the third-party model providers.
