The World Food Prize Foundation has appointed Akinwumi Adesina, outgoing President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), to its Council of Advisors. The announcement was made in New York by the Foundation’s President, Mashal Husain.

Husain described Adesina as a leader whose work aligns with the vision of the Foundation’s founder, Dr. Norman Borlaug.

“President Adesina embodies the values and vision of Dr. Norman Borlaug—transforming bold ideas into tangible impact,” Husain said. “His dedication to agricultural innovation and economic growth makes him an exceptional addition to our Council. We are honoured to welcome him back to the Foundation in this vital role.”

The Council of Advisors includes former heads of state, ministers, scientists, educators, and policy leaders. It supports the Foundation’s mission to advance global food security and uphold the legacy of Dr. Borlaug, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Responding to the appointment, Adesina expressed appreciation and reiterated his commitment to the Foundation’s goals.

“Norman Borlaug was not only a mentor but also a personal inspiration whose passion for ending hunger shaped my journey,” Adesina said. “As a Laureate, I carry his legacy with me, and I look forward to working with the Foundation to champion science-driven solutions that uplift farmers, feed nations, and transform lives.”

Adesina was awarded the World Food Prize in 2017 for his contributions to agricultural development in Africa. He previously served as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2011 to 2015 and was Vice President for Policy and Partnerships at the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).

The Foundation said Adesina’s appointment reflects a continued collaboration aimed at shaping food policy and promoting sustainable agricultural growth worldwide.
