Actions taken to curb market fires

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is intensifying its fire prevention efforts in markets nationwide, recognizing that some fire incidents are intentionally caused. Divisional Officer II and Public Relations Officer Desmond Ackah stated that the GNFS is working with market authorities to enhance fire safety, especially in areas with wooden structures prone to fire outbreaks.

In a JoyNews interview on Friday, April 19, 2025, DO II Ackah emphasized the importance of modern fire prevention measures, such as early warning systems and sufficient escape routes to facilitate evacuation during a fire. He noted that market congestion often impedes emergency response efforts.

A persistent challenge for the GNFS is the limited access to water due to an insufficient number of fire hydrants, which is managed by the Ghana Water Company. DO II Ackah mentioned ongoing discussions with Ghana Water to increase the provision of hydrants.

The GNFS is also increasing public education, with officers visiting markets to educate traders on the safe handling of flammable materials and fire prevention practices. DO II Ackah urged the public to cooperate with fire service personnel during these visits.

Through enhanced partnerships, education, and infrastructure improvements, the GNFS aims to significantly reduce the frequency and impact of market fires across the country.
