Nigeria's U17 women's national team, the Flamingos, achieved a decisive 4–0 victory against Algeria in the first leg of their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifier. The match took place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Saturday, setting a strong tone for Nigeria ahead of the return leg in Algiers.

Queen Joseph was a standout performer, scoring twice, while Zainab Raji and substitute Aishat Animashaun each added a goal, contributing to the emphatic win. The match began swiftly, with Joseph converting a corner delivered by Philomena Isaiah just one minute into the game, hitting the roof of the net with a powerful strike. The Flamingos extended their lead in the 13th minute when Raji, after receiving a pass from Shakirat Moshood, skillfully maneuvered past two defenders and scored with a long-range shot. Joseph then scored her second goal in the 17th minute, navigating through Algeria’s defence to fire a shot past goalkeeper Amelia Yahiaoui, making the score 3–0. Animashaun completed the scoring in the match's final moments, catching Yahiaoui off guard with a curled shot from outside the box.

Despite efforts from Algerian players such as captain Zaza Rebbahi and forward Layana Belgacem to narrow the score in the second half, Nigeria’s defence, led by Azeezat Oduntan, Christianah Sunday, Hannah Ibrahim, and Jumai Adebayo, remained steadfast, preventing any goals.

The match was attended by prominent figures, including the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau; NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi; Executive Committee members, Sharif Rabiu Inuwa and Aisha Falode; and Remo Stars FC proprietor, Hon. Kunle Soname. Following the match, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau announced a combined cash gift of N6 million for the team, with N2 million coming from the NFF and N4 million from Hon. Kunle Soname. He encouraged the team to maintain their performance in the return leg to secure qualification for the tournament in Morocco.

In another FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifier, Kenya's Junior Starlets faced Cameroon's Young Lionesses, losing 1-0 in the first leg. The match took place on April 20, 2025, and the Junior Starlets will need to win the second leg away on April 25 to qualify for the World Cup in Morocco.

The second leg between Nigeria and Algeria is scheduled to be held at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida, Algeria, on Friday. The victor on aggregate will secure a spot as one of Africa’s five representatives at the 2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
