Nkrumah, Rawlings' decisions worsened Bawku tensions - Obiri Boahen

Nana Obiri Boahen, a former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has attributed the ongoing tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities in Bawku to certain political decisions made after Ghana's independence. In an interview on Wontumi TV, he explained that actions taken by past governments exacerbated the conflict.
Boahen specifically mentioned a committee established by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1958, stating that its decisions worsened existing tensions. He further claimed that Pro-CPP activists aligned themselves with the Kusasis during that period.
The former Deputy General Secretary also pointed to a decree passed under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) led by former President Jerry John Rawlings. He stated that PNDC Law 85, which destooled a deceased Bawku Naba who was Mamprusi, significantly heightened tensions in the area.
Boahen added that further escalation occurred when some Mamprusi leaders were banned from entering Bawku township, leading many to flee the area. He appealed to both ethnic groups to cease fire, emphasizing the detrimental role politics has played in the conflict.
The protracted conflict in Bawku has resulted in numerous deaths and has severely impacted the socio-economic development of the Upper East Region.
