Abuja Victory: Notorious 'One-Chance' Syndicate Decimated by Joint Police and FRSC Operations

Law enforcement agencies in Abuja have intensified their efforts against 'one-chance' robbery gangs, leading to the recent apprehension of several suspected members. These criminal groups have been terrorizing commuters in the Federal Capital Territory, often resorting to violence and large-scale financial fraud.
The FCT Police Command reported the arrest of three suspected members following a detailed complaint from a victim on April 30, 2025. The victim recounted being attacked after boarding a commercial vehicle heading to the Central Area. Midway through the journey, the driver and another passenger allegedly brandished a knife, robbing the victim of ₦80,000 cash, two mobile phones, and other personal items. Additionally, the gang reportedly extorted the victim's ATM card and PIN, subsequently withdrawing ₦2.7 million from their account through various Point of Sale (POS) agents across the city. Detectives from the Anti-One-Chance Team ‘B’ and the Surveillance Unit swiftly launched an investigation, culminating in the arrest of Ahmed Mohammed, Ashafa Ali, and Mohammed Lamido Jabir. All three suspects have reportedly confessed to the crime and remain in police custody for further questioning, as efforts are underway to recover stolen property and apprehend other gang members.
In a separate operation, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) FCT Command also apprehended a suspected 'one-chance' gang. Sector Commander Mr. Felix Theman disclosed that a patrol team, led by Moses Gimba, made the arrest around 12:30 pm on a Friday, near Wuse, before the Zone 3 bridge. The team was alerted to the gang after they allegedly attempted to push a victim out of their ash Volkswagen Passat, with registration number EFR 596TT. The FRSC patrol team gave chase as the suspects sped off, eventually getting stuck in traffic and abandoning their vehicle near the Zone 4 traffic light by the AEDC office. The suspects, comprising one male and two females, attempted to flee on foot but were successfully pursued and apprehended by the patrol team. Although the suspects denied involvement in 'one-chance' robberies, they admitted to being a '419' (advance-fee fraud) gang. They were subsequently handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Wuse Division for further investigation, as directed by the Commissioner of Police.
Authorities have assured residents that surveillance and patrols across Abuja are being significantly increased to clamp down on 'one-chance' operators and other criminal groups. Mr. Theman of the FRSC urged residents to exercise extreme caution when boarding unpainted taxis and to remain vigilant to ensure personal safety. Both commands reiterated their commitment to ensuring safer roads and enhanced mobility in the FCT and its environs.
