Abuja's Wike-Built Bus Terminal Collapses Under Heavy Rain, Causes Gridlock

Aheavy rainstorm yesterday wreaked havoc on the multimillionnaira Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja, blowing off large sections of the facility’s roof and causing major traffic disruption along the busy Abuja-Keffi highway.
Abuja Metro reports that the downpour, which began around 3.30pm, was accompanied by strong winds that tore through the yet-to-be-operational terminal, scattering roofing materials and structural components across both lanes of the busy dual carriageway.
The Kugbo Bus Terminal, which was inaugurated in June by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, had not yet been put into use.
Despite its recent completion, parts of the structure proved vulnerable to the severe weather, leading to its partial destruction.
The spread of debris across the highway exacerbated the already heavy traffic, especially as workers were returning home, leaving commuters stranded for several hours on the crucial route connecting the Federal Capital Territory with neighbouring Nasarawa State.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reportedthat some vehicles were struck by the falling debris.
Passersby and residents spontaneously joined efforts to clear the road in an attempt to alleviate the severe gridlock.

The stretch of highway around the Abuja Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre, managed by the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO), was identified as the most severely affected area.
As of Tuesday evening, traffic continued to crawl slowly through the damaged section of the expressway.
Motorists were advised to exercise extreme caution when approaching the affected Kugbo area, as the aftermath of the storm continued to pose challenges for road users.
