Abu Dhabi Police arrest 237 beggars during Ramadan
Abu Dhabi Police apprehended 237 beggars across the emirate during Ramadan, reaffirming their commitment to combating this phenomenon, which tarnishes society’s civilized image. Begging is often a disguised form of fraud, relying on deception and misleading tactics.
Brigadier Musallam Mohammed Al Ameri, Deputy Director of the Criminal Security Sector, stated that beggars attempt to gain public sympathy by fabricating false stories to solicit money. He emphasised that police directorates remain committed to continuous campaigns to apprehend beggars, regardless of their tactics.
He urged the public to help curb begging by refraining from giving alms and zakat directly to beggars. Instead, he encouraged charitable donations through official channels, such as recognised charities and institutions, to ensure contributions reach those genuinely in need.
Al Ameri also warned that giving money to beggars inadvertently encourages them to persist, leading to an increase in crimes committed under the guise of begging.
Abu Dhabi Police have previously cautioned the public against falling for beggars’ tricks aimed at securing financial and material benefits, stressing the need for collective efforts to combat all forms of begging, including street solicitation, marketplace appeals, and online scams.
As part of the fourth edition of its Ramadan campaign, “Our Month… Obedience and Commitment,” police highlighted how beggars exploit social media to achieve illegitimate goals. Unlike traditional beggars outside mosques, in markets, or on streets, online beggars can generate significantly higher sums through digital means.
Authorities have observed a surge in online begging, especially during Ramadan and festive periods. Scammers use emotional messages, fabricated images, and deceptive pleas—claiming to help orphans, fund medical treatments, or build mosques and schools in impoverished areas—to solicit donations.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and avoid transferring money to unknown individuals. Authorities stress the importance of cooperation and awareness in tackling this growing menace.
