Ablekuma North: Akua Afriyie condemns chaos, alleges targeted attacks
The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Afriyie, has strongly condemned the violence that erupted at the St. Peter’s Society polling station during the parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11.
The incident occurred when a group of unidentified macho men stormed the polling centre, attacking voters and election officials, and forcing a temporary suspension of voting. Among those assaulted were Nana Akua Afriyie herself and former Fisheries Minister, Hawa Koomson.
Citi News journalist Jude Duncan confirmed that both women were physically assaulted during the chaos, prompting heightened security in the area. Voting later resumed under reinforced police protection.
Speaking to journalists after the incident, Nana Akua Afriyie alleged that the attacks were deliberately orchestrated by political opponents to disrupt the process and reduce her margin of victory.
“There are hoodlums, thugs, machomen everywhere, and everywhere is chaotic. All these are orchestrated to suppress my margin. The NDC knows that every voter who will come to these polling stations will vote for me, hence the chaos.”
She further disclosed that a supporter of the NPP was injured and hospitalised following an assault at the Light of Gospel Miracle Church polling station.
“Because of the chaos, people are scared to come out to vote, but I want to urge my people to come out to vote because there’s enhanced security. They have assaulted some of our people at the Light of Gospel Miracle Church polling station as well, and one is at the hospital. Why do you have to do this?” She said.
The NPP has formally appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to ensure maximum protection for voters and party supporters as tensions remain high.
The rerun, covering 19 polling stations, was organised by the Electoral Commission (EC) to resolve a longstanding electoral dispute from the December 7, 2024, general elections. The Ablekuma North constituency has been without a Member of Parliament since then.
