Host state, Abia has won the 5th edition of the Para-Badminton open championship which ended Thursday in Umuahia, winning 17 medals (5 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze).
Plateau State took the second position with eight medals, (4 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze), while Ogun State placed third with a total of five medals.
Kwara State placed fourth with 3 gold medals, whereas Imo state completed the top five with a total of nine medals overall (1 gold, 5 silver and three bronze, with other states picking different medals.
However, Ebonyi State finished bottom of the table with no medal, in the competition participated by various states of the Federation.
Declaring the championship officially closed, Governor of Abia State Alex Otti, represented by his Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu praised the Badminton Federation of Nigeria and Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Nwaobilor Ananaba for the success and charged the athletes to see themselves as heroes.
Also speaking, the President of Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr Francis Obih and Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Nwaobilor Ananaba said more sports talents have been discovered for Abia, Nigeria and Africa and thanked the Abia State Governor for sponsoring the Championship.
The closing ceremony witnessed a star match by Para Olympic bronze medallist, Eniola Bolaji who paired with Ayuba Yahaya to defeat Odinakachi Uwalaka and James Akpan in SL3 final
The championship began on Monday July 14 and lasted till Thursday July 17, 2025.
