Abdullahi's Historic Victory Rocks NBBF Presidency!

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi has been elected as the new President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), ushering in a new era for the sport in the country. In the highly anticipated elections held in Abuja on Thursday, October 15, Abdullahi secured a decisive victory with 48 votes, overcoming former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji, who garnered eight votes, and ex-International Ejike Ugboaja, who failed to register any votes. This result marks the succession of outgoing President Musa Kida and signifies a crucial new leadership phase for Nigerian basketball.

Alongside Abdullahi's victory, Ugo Udezue emerged unopposed as the NBBF Vice President, being the sole candidate for the position. The newly constituted board is tasked with addressing significant challenges affecting the sport’s growth and administration, including improving domestic competitions, fostering grassroots development, enhancing players’ welfare, securing adequate funding, and fortifying basketball structures nationwide. Abdullahi, who also serves as the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, takes office at a pivotal moment, following recent international successes by the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, and increasing demands for robust local structures to sustain and build upon these achievements. The new administration is expected to leverage these accomplishments to create more opportunities for athletes and elevate the competitiveness of domestic basketball leagues.

Reflecting on his personal journey, Dr. Abdullahi described his emergence as the federation's leader as a defining moment, rooted in a lifelong passion for the sport. He shared a poignant anecdote from his youth in Northern Nigeria, recalling how he once had to borrow money to buy basketball shoes. This early financial challenge, he explained, has deeply influenced his resolve to establish better opportunities and support systems for aspiring athletes today. Abdullahi views his election as more than a personal milestone; it is a profound commitment to the future of Nigerian basketball, pledging to collaborate with all stakeholders to expand the game, strengthen its developmental frameworks, and harness basketball’s power as a tool for social and economic empowerment. He stated his determination to "elevate the game, inspire a new generation and harness the power of basketball to empower young people, create opportunities and lift them off the streets towards brighter futures."

Abdullahi's ascendancy has garnered considerable support and optimism from various stakeholders within the Nigerian basketball community. Morpheus Major-Idoko, founder and CEO of Graffiti Basketball and Music (BAM), expressed strong confidence in Abdullahi's leadership, citing his proven track record in organizing competitions. Major-Idoko emphasized the potential for basketball to generate substantial economic benefits through areas such as media rights, merchandising, ticketing, and food and beverage services, believing that Abdullahi's administration can unlock this commercial potential. Similarly, national referee Daniel Jonah conveyed optimism for increased training clinics and seminars under the new leadership, which would enhance the competence of officials and, consequently, the quality of basketball games. Paul Solomon Dibal, representing the players, also voiced hope for more tournaments and expanded opportunities for athletes, believing that Abdullahi's presidency will provide a larger and more effective platform for the sport's growth.

The full composition of the NBBF board under Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi includes Ugo Udezue as Vice President, who also represents the South East zone. Other zonal representatives are Abba Abdullair Kaka for the North East, Yusuf Surajo for the North West, Hon. Fubara Vincent for the South South, and Babatunde Ogunade for the South West. Dr. Abdullahi himself will represent the North Central zone. The board further integrates specialized representatives: Sule Mohammed as the technical representative, DC Lucky Aliyu as the players’ representative, Emmanuel Iza representing corporate sponsors, Bamiduro Olumide for NAPHER-SD, and Prof. Florence Adeyanju representing the Nigerian Association of Women in Sports. This diverse board is expected to work collaboratively towards the holistic development of basketball across Nigeria.
