A Century of Service: Nation Celebrates Afenifere Leader Pa Fasoranti's 100th Birthday

Elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, was celebrated across Nigeria on the occasion of his 100th birthday. Dignitaries, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and President Bola Tinubu, paid glowing tributes to the centenarian, describing him as a towering symbol of patriotism, democratic ideals, integrity, and principled leadership whose indelible contributions to Nigeria’s political evolution and national development are widely recognized.
Born in Akure a century ago, Pa Fasoranti distinguished himself early in life as a dedicated teacher and school administrator. His academic journey saw him attain accomplishments at notable institutions such as the University College, Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), the University of Hull in the United Kingdom, and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia. Beyond his personal academic achievements, he left enduring footprints in the education sector by contributing immensely to the establishment of schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School extensions, and St. Frances’ Academy, Igoba, Akure.
Pa Fasoranti’s greatest impact, however, stemmed from his robust involvement in politics, public service, and democratic activism. He was deeply entrenched in Nigeria's political landscape from the First Republic, being an active member of the defunct Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). During the administration of the late former governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin in old Ondo State, between 1979 and 1983, Pa Fasoranti commendably served as Commissioner for Finance, where his integrity and prudence were crucial in the effective management of the state’s finances.
Throughout his life, Pa Fasoranti remained one of Nigeria’s foremost and unwavering voices for democracy, federalism, and restructuring. He played active and significant roles in the nation’s pro-democracy struggles, standing alongside nationalist leaders such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose principles he faithfully embodied as one of his last surviving disciples. He steadfastly promoted the Yoruba ethos of Omoluabi, anchored on discipline, integrity, and good conduct. Even during the challenging military era, he endured persecution and hardship, yet remained resolute in his conviction that democratic governance represented the optimal path for Nigeria’s growth and unity. His voice became a strong rallying point against military dictatorship, demanding the return of democracy to the land, even surviving an assassination attempt during the regime of late General Sani Abacha, an ordeal from which he emerged even stronger and more determined to resist oppression.
Following the passing of Pa Abraham Adesanya, Pa Fasoranti rightfully emerged as the recognized and respected leader of Afenifere, successfully maintaining the unity and relevance of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation. Despite facing profound personal tragedies over the years, including the death of his wife in 1991 and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, by kidnappers in July 2019, he exhibited remarkable resilience and steadfastness.
Governor Abiodun lauded him as “a national treasure” whose counsel and moral authority continue to inspire leaders across generations, while President Tinubu celebrated his uncommon life of service, sacrifice, and steadfast devotion to noble causes. As Pa Fasoranti clocks 100 on Sunday, with prominent political leaders, traditional rulers, and associates expected to attend celebrations in his honour, the Government and People of Ogun State, along with countless admirers nationwide, continue to pray for many more fruitful years in good health and peace for the elder statesman.
