A$AP Rocky Shakes Up NYC Politics, Teases 2029 Mayoral Bid

A$AP Rocky, a prominent figure in music, fashion, and film, has teased a potential bid for the New York City Mayor’s Office, expressing his aspirations during a recent interview with Esquire on Wednesday, January 28. Rocky, identifying himself as a man of the people and a modern renaissance man, firmly believes he possesses the qualities necessary for public office. When questioned about a future in politics, he confidently responded, "For sure," emphasizing that numerous political affairs need urgent attention and significant changes must be implemented. He stated, "I think that I would really do well because I’m a guy that’s for the people."
Rocky outlined several critical issues he intends to address within the Big Apple, highlighting pervasive infrastructure problems such as potholes, which he vows to "fix." He also criticized the recent increase in train fares to $3, labeling it "f—ing crazy," and spoke out against the adverse effects of inflation. Furthermore, he expressed strong concern over the reduction of SNAP, welfare, and food stamp benefits, stating, "that’s where I derive from." His platform would also prioritize creating more job opportunities and establishing better healthcare access for citizens.
Distinguishing himself from conventional politicians, Rocky argued that while many promise similar reforms, their decisions often stem from "ulterior motives" and are "really self-beneficial." He contrasted this with his own position, asserting, "For me, I make a really great living off being myself." As a wealthy individual who accumulated his fortune outside the political arena, Rocky believes he is uniquely positioned to avoid the pitfalls and traps that other politicians frequently encounter once in office. He passionately implored NYC citizens to "2029 vote for Mayor Mayers," adding, "Vote for Rocky."
Having already made substantial impacts across music, fashion, and film, politics appears to be the next frontier for Rocky. The current political landscape in New York City features Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is in his first year in office after winning the 2025 mayoral election with 50.78 percent of the vote, defeating opponents Curtis Sliwa and former Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo.
It remains to be seen whether the incumbent mayor will seek a second term in light of Rocky’s stated ambitions. On the musical front, Rocky recently released his album “Don’t Be Dumb,” seven-plus years after “TESTING,” which topped the Billboard 200 with 123,000 equivalent album units in its first week. His political aspirations were reportedly a key topic around the 15-minute mark of his Esquire interview.
