7 vital health checks every man over 30 should take - Dr Okoe Boye
Dr Bernard Okoe Boye is a former Minister of Health
Former Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has urged men aged 30 years and above to prioritise their health by undergoing seven key medical tests to detect some life-threatening conditions early.
In a health advisory post on his X account on July 15, Dr Okoe Boye said the cultural responsibilities placed on men often cause them to neglect regular health checks, a trend he describes as dangerous.
“These tests are not luxuries; they are necessities, especially for men over 30,” he said.
Here are the seven essential tests he recommends for men over 30
1. Blood pressure and blood sugar check
He urged adult men to regularly monitor their blood pressure and fasting blood glucose levels. Dr Okoe Boye suggested that doing these tests at two different hospitals may help confirm results. These tests help detect hypertension and diabetes, both of which can silently damage your organs.
2. Cardiac enzymes test
This test checks for signs of heart damage or strain. It is vital for identifying heart disease, especially if you experience chest pain or shortness of breath.
3. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing helps with the early detection of prostate cancer, which is among the top cancers affecting men. Men with a family history of the disease should start testing even earlier.
4. Kidney function test
A renal function test can uncover early signs of kidney failure or damage. It’s especially important for men with diabetes or high blood pressure.
5. Liver function test
Dr Okoe Boye calls the liver the “Zoomlion of the body,” as it filters toxins. Liver function tests can reveal fatty liver, alcohol-related damage, or hepatitis.
6. Lipid profile
This checks your cholesterol levels both good (HDL) and bad (LDL). A poor lipid profile is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and blocked arteries.
7. Body mass index (BMI)
A person’s BMI helps assess whether you are underweight, healthy, overweight, or obese. It's a simple yet powerful tool for monitoring overall body health and guiding lifestyle changes.
Dr Okoe Boye emphasised that early detection saves lives, and encouraged men not to wait until symptoms appear before taking action.
