Linen season is in full swing, and the fashion girlies are hard at work tapping into one of fashion’s best natural resources. The streets of New York City (and probably every other fashion capital, too) are currently flushed with breezy linen skirts of all lengths, turning the streets of Soho into a boho summer mood board.

With the US experiencing record-breaking temps, the summertime staple’s appeal is threefold. Its delightfully imperfect texture gives off an easy, boho vibe that’s perfect for anyone hoping to curate a Chloé-influenced summer. Likewise, linen looks good rumpled or pressed, and as a plant-based (compostable) natural fabric, it’s also lightweight and incredibly breathable. Not to mention its cotton-like quick-dry capability, which makes linen garments of any kind a great choice for beachwear.

Now that we’re all in agreement regarding linen’s many, many benefits, let’s talk about styling. The fabrication pairs best with equally breezy blouses, earthy jewelry, chunky ’00s-era belts, and beachy waves—that goes without saying. It’s the shoes that can really be the tough part. Ahead, read up on all the shoe styles you should (and shouldn’t) wear with your favorite linen skirt or dress.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Cowboy boots truly go with everything. Give your favorite linen piece a subtle, Western feel by slipping into a pointed-toe pair. It’s a great combination for music festivals, backyard parties, or chilly nights down the shore

Linen is typically associated with more casual attire, but it actually can be fitting for a working environment. Paired with a matching linen blazer and loafers, you can take summer’s most trusted trend to the office and beyond.

Contrasting colors will pop.

A simple linen skirt in a vibrant summer hue demands to be paired with a similarly bright shoe. Green skirts go well with pink pumps, red styles look lovely with yellow sneakers, and Aperol orange clashes beautifully with rich, royal blue shoe styles. Consider this your sign to get playful with your color pairings.

When in doubt, reach for your most dependable ballerina flats. They’ve never failed you before and they certainly won’t now. The easy-to-wear shoe looks just as good with a white linen skirt as they do with slip skirts or baggy jean shorts.

Toughen things up.

Like linen’s relationship to cowboy boots, the fabric also wears well with chunkier boot options. Pop on your comfiest pair of worn-in Docs or a cool creeper style to give the hippie-favorite fabric an unexpectedly punk vibe.

Kitten heels are a demure choice.

The hero of summer footwear, meet the hero of summer fabrics. When combined, their stylistic strengths combine to create a posh look that won’t stifle. It’s a great hack for summertime office dressing.

Though linen skirts are the hero of casual closets everywhere, they can absolutely be elevated for more formal events. Reach for a pair of strappy heels the next time you need a last-minute dinner look or a posh summer wedding guest ’fit.
