2027 Race Heats Up: Atiku, Obi, Amaechi Pledge Support for ADC Presidential Ticket Winner

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders' caucus recently convened in Abuja, culminating in significant decisions impacting the party's trajectory towards the 2027 general elections. A primary outcome of the Thursday meeting was a unanimous agreement among all presidential hopefuls within the opposition coalition party to collectively support and back whichever candidate ultimately emerges from the party's primary selection process. This commitment aims to foster party unity and present a formidable front in the upcoming elections.
Furthermore, the caucus meeting firmly decided against the adoption of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), effectively foreclosing any affiliation with the said alliance by the party leadership. This resolution was confirmed by Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC national publicity secretary, who stated, “The Coalition has rested everything concerning the ADA. That means they are not interested in the registration or otherwise of the association.” Additionally, party leaders issued a directive for all members to resign their membership from any other political parties, though a specific timeline for this compliance was not immediately provided.
The high-profile meeting, chaired by ADC national chairman Senator David Mark, saw the attendance of several prominent political figures. Notable attendees included the party’s national secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, and national publicity secretary Malam Bolaji Abdullahi. Other influential personalities present were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers governor Chibuike Amaechi, former Sokoto State governor Senator Aminu Tambuwal, former Kwara State governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, former minister of Communication and Digital Economy Ali Pantami, and former secretary to the government of the federation Babachir Lawal, among others. While national leader of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, was absent, he conveyed his apologies and reaffirmed his commitment to the party's objectives. Currently, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Chibuike Amaechi have explicitly expressed their interest in contesting for the ADC's presidential ticket in the run-up to the 2027 elections, all having pledged to support the eventual flag-bearer.
