100th NEC: PDP reaffirms Anyanwu as National Secretary, fixes another NEC on 23rd July

Published 15 hours ago5 minute read

The initial political turbulence, chaos and mutual suspicion in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the early hours of Monday prelude to its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting ended on a friendly and cordial note as NEC unanimously reaffirmed Sen. Samuel Anyanwu as its National Secretary.

NEC also fixed another NEC meeting on the 23rd of July and asked the National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum to liaise with the National Secretary for a valid notification to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The attendance register released by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature before NEC was called to order showing that about 302 persons were in attendance.

Pointblanknews.com had earlier reported that the party’s 100th NEC had been enmeshed in series of controversy. While some stakeholders loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike held that any NEC meeting not endorsed by the party’s National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu wass null and void and renamed the meeting to ‘expanded caucus’, another faction led by Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo state maintained that NEC must hold on Monday, arguing that all conditions had been met.

Earlier on Monday, members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) that came for a meeting were denied access to the NWC hall by security personnel over the charged atmosphere and in an attempt to prevent break down of law and order.

Speaking with journalists after the NEC, Damagum said, “We’ve all combined in one, we were all together, and we all agree that Senator Anyanwu will continue to act as National Secretary.

“On the issue of the convention, we will bring it up in the next NEC, which is slated for the 23rd of next month.

“At that time, we will be able to convene a proper NEC, where myself and Senator Anyanwu will sign, which is to fulfill the regulatory requirement of INEC in convening meetings” he said.

Damagum called on members of the party to stop demarketing PDP. He said that the party reinvented itself using its internal conflict resolution mechanism and shamed naysayers looking forth for the disintegration of the party after NEC.

“I will still use the opportunity to call on party faithful to stop arbitrary demarketing of this party. I want the media to know, if you so much love this party, I think it is now time for you to devote your energy in propagating the beauty of this party and stop demarketing the party unless if you are one of those that have been contracted to come and destroy our party.

“I want to say it clearly here, enough is enough” he warned.

In his goodwill message, chairman of the party’s BoT, Sen. Adolphus Wabara expressed joy that the party has once again used its mechanism to solve its problems.

“I have always contended that this party will never die no matter what her detractors feel. This party will never die. We shall survive. The god of politics is in this party. Allah of politics is in this party. For anybody, any other party, to succeed, we have to release our God to bless them. But our God knows that PDP is the beacon of hope for this country.

“What is happening here today will shock so many people. I’m sure they will start planning again to bring problems. NWCs don’t allow a crack anymore” he cautioned

Bauchi state governor who spoke on behalf of other PDP governors renewed his confidence in the PDP and described the recent defections in the party as cosmetic.

“This is a miracle of the PDP, the party that has history, that has the pedigree and the human capital to deliver Nigeria. We have been engrossed in controversies and challenges, not created by us, but created for us, and we have been navigating, unlike the other parties, irrespective of the manifestations and the perceptions there.

“The news of people leaving the party are all cosmetic. We are all created to diminish us. But I must thank the leaders and other all the organs of the party, especially the BoT, the caucuses of the National Assembly, and most important to my colleagues and the NWC, because everything we are doing, we are doing for the NWC today. I must tell the world that the NWC has collapsed all differences, all wrangling” he said.

Present at the meeting were Goverors of Oyo Stat Engr. Seyi Makinde, Sen. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Sen. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Barr. Caleb Muftwang of Plateau and Umaru Fintri of Adamawa and Sen. Diri Duoye of Bayelsa State.

Others are former Senate President Bukola Saraki, former PDP Secretary Prof. Jerry Gana, BoT Secretary Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, former governor of Bayelsa State Sen. seriaki Dickson, former governor of Akwa Ibom State Emmanuel Udom, Senate Minority leader Sen. Abba Moro and National Vice Chairman South Amb. Taofeek Arapaja.
