10 Most Important Harry Potter Characters (Who Aren't in the Movies)

Published 1 week ago9 minute read

The Harry Potter movies are best known for following its Golden Trio of heroes. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry), Emma Watson (Hermione), and Rupert Grint (Ron) all managed to embody their characters with apparent ease. For a decade, they brought those heroes to life, making the Wizarding World into an almost tangible place.

While the Golden Trio was brought to the big screen, many other important characters were not. The movies may have adapted Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) and Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), but other supporting characters failed to earn a proper place in the movies.

Once a living professor who loved teaching his students about the History of Magic, Professor Binns quickly became one of Hogwarts' most bizarre staff members. After all, Binns died in the staffroom and awoke as a ghost, only to return to lecturing his classes the next day. The books claim that Binns hardly seemed to notice his death.

Outside of the books, Binns' only major appearance was in the game Hogwarts Legacy.

Binns has always been described as. He droned on and on without engaging his students, leading to an inability for the students to actually learn. While he may be a droll professor, he is an absolutely hilarious character. He was also important, as he ought to have been the Professor who taught Hermione about the Chamber of Secrets. Instead, that responsibility went to Professor McGonagall, as Binns was completely cut from the movies.

Augusta Longbottom was a woman who was . After Neville's parents were brutally tortured, she took Neville in and raised him as her own child. She never resented him, and she did her best to turn him into a brave and strong young wizard. She did make mistakes, but she was crucial in raising Neville into a good man.

The Fantastic Beasts movies never had enough traction, largely because the Harry Potter fans hated those ill-fitted spin-off movies — for good reason.

Augusta did appear in the movies, where she was played by Leila Hoffman and Ninette Finch, but her appearances were both short and unimportant. Augusta is only ever a background character, stripping her of an important role in Neville's life. Neville may not be a main character, but his grandmother still deserved better than to be completely ignored.

, which comes down to the fact that it lacks many important characters. In Harry's year, the only standout Hufflepuffs of any note were Zacharias Smith, Hannah Abbott, and Justin Finch-Fletchley. None are especially of note. Cedrick Diggory may be important, but even he could not uplift an entire House. That was supposed to be Ernest Macmillan's job.

House Hufflepuff was founded by Helga Hufflepuff, who believed in fostering kindness, loyalty, and fairness.

Ernest was a brilliant young man who entered Hogwarts in the same year as Harry. He was a close friend of the legendary wizard, and he even joined Dumbledore's Army and fought against Voldemort in the Battle of Hogwarts. He deserved to be seen on-screen, especially given that he often reflected the feelings of the other Hogwarts students.

While Neville was raised by his grandmother, he still had parents who once loved him. Alice and Frank Longbottom hoped to raise their son, but they were instead tortured beyond the brink of sanity by Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter), Barty Crouch Jr. (David Tennant), and other Dark Wizards. These heroic people spent the rest of their lives at

St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, where Neville would occasionally visit.

Alice and Frank Longbottom were Aurors and members of the Order of the Phoenix.

Neville's parents did appear in the movies, but they never truly had any role in the story. Alice (Lisa Wood) and Frank (

James Payton) were simply images on a photograph in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007). A single image hardly reflects their impact on the story, of their loss. They should have been present in the movies, where Neville could have connected with them.

A rare example of a good Slytherin character, Andromeda Tonks existed to bring nuance to the world of Harry Potter. She was a Slytherin pureblood from a Sacred Twenty-Eight family. By all rights, she should have become a Dark Wizard like many others in her family. Instead, she shook convention, married a Muggle-born wizard, and

Andromeda should have been included in the films for a myriad of reasons, not least of which is being the mother of

Nymphadora Tonks (Natalia Tena). Instead, she was excluded, making Sirius the standout hero of the Black family. It was a disappointing exclusion that hurt House Slytherin immensely.

Though not always helpful, most ghosts in the Harry Potter universe do not go out of their way to hurt the living. Many embrace the students and come to represent their Houses as embodiments of their values. Peeves the Poltergeist did not have many values. Instead, he was an agent of chaos who sought to wreak havoc on innocent students.

Peeves has been a resident of Hogwarts since its creation.

Peeves was always a delight in the books, as he could. He wrote curses on blackboards, threw things at students, and even mocked the professors. Considering how dark the later movies in the franchise would become, he would have been much-needed comic relief. Instead, he was blatantly excluded for no reason at all.

Harry Potter is often criticized for its treatment of the House Elves, but. After Barty Crouch Sr. forced Winky to guard his son, who was held captive by the Imperius Curse, Winky was left to wrestle a wand away from her charge. She was discovered and accused of casting a Dark Mark with the forbidden wand. Crouch Sr. dismissed Winky from his charge, and she was forced to work in the Hogwarts kitchens.

The horrendous storyline would not appear on the big screen.

Hermione discovered Winky's plight, which led her to form the Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare (S.P.E.W.). Given that the dark S.P.E.W. storyline was rightfully cut from the movies, as it cast Harry in a terrible light, Winky never appeared at all. The House Elves never found their hero in Hermione, and the horrendous storyline would not appear on the big screen.

The Weasley family is an essential part of the Harry Potter universe. Every single Weasley sibling plays an important role in the story. Ron is a member of the Golden Trio, Ginny is Harry's love interest, Fred and George offer both comic relief and tragedy, Percy is a Prefect, Bill joins the Order of the Phoenix, and Charlie exists. The movies simply never found a place for the second-eldest Weasley.

Charlie found a personal niche as a dragon researcher in Romania. Because he spent so much of the story in Romania, he simply never had time to return to see his siblings or to fight alongside them. Charlie would never become as prominent as his siblings, though he still worked to rally international wizards to their side. He was important, but

If Harry Potter became a force of good despite the Dursleys, then Voldemort became a force of evil because of his family. . Merope was a witch who struggled to use her powers, due to her father's ongoing abuse. As such, she was extremely weak until she was freed from his control. As soon as she was, she ensnared Tom Riddle, a Muggle, with a love potion, and the two bore a son together.

The Order of the Phoenix Movie Cut 1 Major Part of the Harry Potter Book

The Order of the Phoenix was a fun Harry Potter movie, but it also cut out some fun scenes fans would've liked to see.

Because Voldemort was conceived under the effects of a love potion, he was born into a troubled family. His father abandoned them before his birth, and his mother died on the steps of an orphanage. It was an extremely tragic scene that was cut from the movie completely. That made Voldemort a far less comprehensible character, as it added some essential backstory that explained his dark personality.

If Merope was the start of the young Voldemort's tragic life, then Marvolo Gaunt was the start of her tragedy. Marvolo was an extremely abusive father. He spent so much time ridiculing his daughter that she lost the ability to do anything but meager magic. She had immense potential, and his abuse squandered it.

His abusive nature is the reason that Voldemort was born at all.

Marvolo was a bitter, hateful, and violent man who wanted nothing more than to see others suffer. He even attacked a Ministry official, which earned him a lengthy stay in Azkaban. Marvolo may not have appeared in the movies, but his abusive nature is the reason that Voldemort was born at all. Without him, the Wizarding World would have been a far better place.
