007 Casting Carousel: Former Bond Admits Return, Frontrunners Flattered, Egerton Breaks Silence

The highly anticipated search for the next James Bond continues to fuel widespread speculation, with various actors addressing the persistent rumors. Following Daniel Craig's impactful five-film tenure as the iconic secret agent, which concluded with 2021's No Time To Die, the casting process represents a significant "rebirth" for the legendary franchise.

Taron Egerton, the 35-year-old Rocketman star, has been long-linked to the 007 role, even receiving backing from Roger Moore's son, Geoffrey, in 2019. However, Egerton recently expressed doubts about his suitability, telling Collider, "I don't think I'm a good choice for it, I think I'm too messy for that." He acknowledged his love for James Bond, particularly Daniel Craig's portrayal, but believes the role would be "wasted on me" and that "so many cool, younger actors" would be better suited. Egerton has previous experience in the spy genre, having starred as Gary "Eggsy" Unwin in the Kingsman film franchise. His other notable credits include winning a Golden Globe for portraying Elton John in Rocketman and his recent lead role in the Apple TV+ series Smoke.

Daniel Craig, 57, reflected on his time as 007, calling it an "honour" and an "important part of my life." His Bond films included Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), and Spectre (2015).

Adding to the intrigue, former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, 72, who played 007 from 1995 to 2002 across four films (GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day), admitted he would return "in a heartbeat." When asked about reprising the role as a "senior citizen," Brosnan stated, "I don't think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if [next 007 director Denis] Villeneuve had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat." He joked about the possibilities, including "Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?"

A surprise front-runner who has emerged in recent bookies' lists is British actor Mike Dickman, 40. Dickman, who transitioned from a corporate career to acting, expressed being "flattered" by the linkage to the vacant 007 role, especially alongside established names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Tom Hardy, and Henry Cavill. Dickman is rapidly building an impressive portfolio, with a cameo in Barbie, a supporting role in the psychological thriller Secrets (releasing August 19 on Amazon), and a prominent part in the upcoming Gandhi series, which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. In Gandhi, he portrays the racist Captain Harry Sparks. Dickman is also working on an adaptation of William Corlett's novel, Now and Then, a relationship-driven coming-of-age drama.

Beyond Egerton and Dickman, other actors frequently mentioned in the running include Jacob Elordi, Harris Dickinson, and Tom Holland. There is also ongoing speculation around Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 35, and Henry Cavill, 42, although reports suggest their age (being over 30) might potentially rule them out, despite Mike Dickman, 40, being a frontrunner. The decision on who will ultimately become the next James Bond remains unannounced, as Amazon MGM Studios continues its search for the iconic spy.
