Yankees place Clarke Schmidt on IL with forearm tightness - Newsday
After throwing only 55 pitches in three innings against the Blue Jays on Thursday, Clarke Schmidt exited with what the Yankees described as right forearm tightness.
On Friday morning, the team placed the righthander on the 15-day injured list.
Manager Aaron Boone said before Friday afternoon’s game against the Mets that Schmidt is “getting an MRI now” and that he does not know if he will have an update after the game.
The team recalled two relievers – righty Scott Effross and lefthander Jayvien Sandridge – in response after also optioning righthander Clayton Beeter, who threw 1 2/3 innings in relief of Schmidt on Thursday, to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Schmidt said the tightness is something he has dealt with since his June 4 start. Boone said Friday that the discomfort never previously rose to a level where Schmidt needed to undergo testing.
“It just didn't rise to a level of, I mean, we'd be testing guys every week when pitchers deal with things,” Boone said. “So it didn't rise to a level. The performance was good. He was getting to that point of where he could go. Stuff's been really good. He's just had a hard time recovering. I talked about this – even going back to the no-hit bid – where he's kind of grinding through some things a little bit.
“So, I mean, that's part of being a pitcher in the league, though, is you're going to have those days, those weeks when it's a little bit of a struggle and doesn't always rise to jumping into any MRI tube.”
In 14 starts, Schmidt is 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA, a career-best 1.093 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 78 2/3 innings. He had a scoreless innings streak of 28 1/3 innings last month, including a seven-inning hitless start against the Orioles on June 21.
