Women urged to lead peace efforts in Mandera to curb insecurity

Published 14 hours ago1 minute read

Women in Mandera County have been urged to take a lead role in promoting peace and preventing conflict as part of ongoing efforts to address insecurity in the North Eastern region.

In a workshop convened by the Action for Sustainable Change (AFOSC) through the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) in Mandera, women, peace champions, and government officials came together to discuss ways to strengthen early warning systems for timely conflict response.

The forum, officiated by the County Chief Officer for Gender and Women Empowerment alongside AFOSC Executive Director Mohamed Sheikh, was part of a broader initiative to enhance women’s role in peace building.

Speaking at the event, Sheikh emphasised the importance of involving women in identifying potential threats before violence escalates.

The workshop comes just over a week after the recent killing of women and children in Banisa, Mandera County.
The attack, believed to be linked to ongoing local conflict, has renewed calls for justice and long-term solutions to insecurity in the region.

“Violence is never a solution. Only through unity, accountability, and compassion can we build a future where all people can live in safety and dignity,” Sheikh stated.
