Women's Basketball Stymied by Harvard's Second-Half Run, Falls 62-44
The University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team led by as many as six points late in the first half, but they were once again done in by a stellar second-half run as Harvard picked up a 62-44 victory Saturday evening at Lavietes Pavilion.
The defeat snaps a four-game win streak for Penn who falls to 15-11 overall, 6-7 in Ivy play, while the Crimson improve to 21-4, 10-3.
With just one game left to play in the regular season, the Quakers are a game in front of Brown for fourth place in the hunt for an Ivy Madness berth.
*Penn would have clinched a spot in the Ivy League Tournament with a win. Instead, it waits for next Saturday's results to decide its fate.
*Both Stina Almqvist and Katie Collins finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Collins added a block.
*Mataya Gayle scored nine points in 40 minutes, but turned the ball over seven times and only had three assists.
*The Quakers shot 32.0 percent (16-for-50) from the floor and just 21.4 percent (3-for-14) from beyond-the-arc. They were a perfect 9-of-9 from the foul line.
*Harvard scored 21 of its 62 points of Penn's 18 turnovers. Harmoni Turner led the way with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists.
Penn won the opening tipoff and almost immediately scored first after Gayle drained her first three of the night.
Defense was key for both teams throughout the opening period, but the Quakers had a four-point lead at 10-6 with 2:28 remaining in the first when Collins scored a layup from Gayle. That lead became six just seconds later when Almqvist scored a layup of her own as Penn took a 12-8 edge into the second.
Penn saw its lead extend to four points with 5:47 remaining in the second after Simone Sawyer found the basket and it took a six-point cushion once again with 3:16 left. Harvard began to chip away by going on a 7-2 run to trim it to 23-22 with 1:17 to go.
The Crimson took a one-point lead with 45 seconds left, but Penn regained it on Almqvist's and-one before the Crimson sank a bucket with one second left to knot the game up at 26-all after 20 minutes.
Harvard was stellar in the third quarter, outscoring the Quakers 19-8 in the stanza, and against outpaced them in the fourth, 17-10, to come away with the 62-44 victory.
