Women advocacy group calls for accountability, justice in Sen. Natasha's suspension

Hajia Nike AbdulRahman, the National Convener of Women Advocacy for Good Governance and a Cultural and Heritage Value Advocate, has voiced strong condemnation regarding the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate. The suspension, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), stems from Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's allegations of sexual harassment against the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

In a statement released to NAN in Akure on Saturday, AbdulRahman asserted that the suspension undermines the fundamental principles of justice and fair hearing. She cautioned that this action sets a perilous precedent for the treatment of women who summon the courage to report abuse and misconduct.

AbdulRahman stated, "The swift suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan raises serious concerns about the Senate’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of its members. By silencing a voice calling for accountability, the Senate leadership is not only failing Akpoti-Uduaghan but also millions of women across Nigeria who look to our legislative institutions for support and justice."

She urged the Senate to take immediate action to reinstate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, ensuring her ability to represent her constituents without fear of reprisal. AbdulRahman emphasized, "This is not only a matter of justice for her but also the fundamental right of the people of Kogi Central Senatorial Zone."

The National Convener called for independent investigations into the allegations, insisting that Senator Akpabio should step aside to facilitate an impartial and transparent inquiry. She stressed that an independent probe is crucial to restoring public confidence in the Senate and ensuring that justice is served without any undue interference.

AbdulRahman further advocated for the implementation of comprehensive policies and procedures within the Senate to protect individuals who report misconduct. She emphasized that all allegations should be treated with utmost seriousness and investigated thoroughly. Consequently, she called upon the Senate leadership to address broader issues of accountability and integrity within its ranks, asserting that the ongoing scandals and allegations against Senator Akpabio and others must be handled transparently, with measures in place to prevent future occurrences.

"We call upon all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, to rally in support of survivors of sexual harassment and to advocate for systemic reforms that protect their rights and dignity," AbdulRahman declared. She added, "As we commemorate International Women’s Day today, let us reaffirm our commitment to fighting for justice and equality. Women must not be silenced or punished for speaking out against abuse. It is time for our leaders to demonstrate integrity, uphold the law, and ensure that women’s voices are heard and respected."

AbdulRahman concluded by urging the Senate to act decisively and restore faith in Nigeria's democratic institutions, stating, "Together, we can build a governance system that is accountable, just, and equitable for all."
