Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan's Suspension and Allegations Against Senator Akpabio

The Nigerian Senate has been embroiled in a tumultuous series of events involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. These events have culminated in Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's suspension from the Senate for six months, adding fuel to an already fiery controversy.

The initial spark of this controversy traces back to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's persistent allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The senator first brought the allegations to the forefront by resubmitting a petition during a Senate plenary, this time purportedly on behalf of her constituents, led by Zubairu Yakubu. This action followed an earlier attempt to present a similar petition, which was stymied by procedural objections, primarily from Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno, who cited Senate Standing Order 40. Monguno argued that the matter was sub judice due to an ongoing court case involving Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and Ekaette Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President. He also pointed out that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had personally signed the petition, rendering it inadmissible under Senate rules.

Despite these challenges, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan pressed forward, leading Senate President Akpabio to inquire about legal impediments to accepting the petition. Upon her assurance that there were none, he instructed her to formally present it to the Senate. The petition was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen, with a mandate to report back within four weeks.

Adding to the escalating tensions, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously protested the reassignment of her seat in the Senate chamber, which she perceived as an unjustified attempt to silence her. This protest further strained her relationship with Senate President Akpabio and contributed to the charged atmosphere within the Senate.

In response to these events, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing violations of Senate rules. According to the committee's recommendation, Senator Natasha's suspension would take effect from March 6, 2025. The recommendation also included the locking of her office, barring her from the National Assembly premises during the suspension, and the withdrawal of her salaries and those of her legislative aides. Moreover, the committee suggested prohibiting her from representing Nigeria in any official capacity as a senator during the suspension.

The Senate's decision to suspend Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has elicited mixed reactions. Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro appealed for a reduction in the proposed suspension from six months to three, acknowledging that Akpoti-Uduaghan had violated Senate rules but urging his colleagues to temper justice with mercy. However, the Senate ultimately voted to uphold the six-month suspension.

Adding another layer to the controversy, Cyril Fasuyi, a senator representing Ekiti North, claimed that Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously accused Kayode Fayemi, a former minister of solid minerals, of selling the Ajaokuta Steel Mill. This accusation prompted a response from Fayemi, who stated that his past engagements with Akpoti-Uduaghan were strictly professional.

Amidst these developments, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu weighed in on the controversy, stating that the Senate is taking the necessary steps to address the sexual harassment allegations. She emphasized that the Senate chamber should be a place of honor, not controversy, and urged Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership positions.

In response to her suspension, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has rejected the Senate's decision, asserting that she remains a legitimate senator. She stated that her suspension violates the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity, and vowed to continue serving her constituents to the best of her ability.

The suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has sparked widespread debate and condemnation from various quarters. Former presidential spokesman Laolu Akande has expressed concern over what he describes as attempts to suppress the senator. Oby Ezekwesili, a former minister of education, has urged the Senate not to dismiss the petition filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Akpabio. Additionally, the Bloggers and Vloggers, Content Creators Association in Nigeria (BAVCCA) has expressed concern over the growing trend of media sensationalism and trial by public opinion on sensitive issues.

The unfolding saga in the Nigerian Senate has raised questions about due process, fairness, and the treatment of women in positions of power. As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen what further actions will be taken and what impact these events will have on the integrity and functioning of the Nigerian Senate.
