Kakamega: Form 4 Student Allegedly Kills Girlfriend

Navakholo, Kakamega County, is in mourning following the tragic death of a young woman named Grace, allegedly murdered by her boyfriend. The heartbreaking discovery was made early in the morning when workers heading to her father's farm found her lifeless body just a few meters from her home.

Robert Wesamba, Grace's father, recounted the grim discovery. He explained that he had hired men to work on his shamba (farm), and they arrived around 5 a.m. As they approached the area with their cows, the animals reacted strangely, prompting them to investigate. Shining a light on the road, they were horrified to find Grace's body.

Wesamba further noted the brutal nature of the attack, stating that his daughter had deep cuts all over her body, indicating a violent assault. The community is reeling from the shock of this senseless act.

Grace's sister, Nafula, revealed that Grace and her alleged boyfriend, a Form Four student, had been experiencing difficulties in their relationship. Nafula had previously expressed her concerns to Grace about dating a young man at her age, but her warnings were unheeded. "Their drama had been going on for a while. I even sat her down to discourage her from getting involved with a man at her age, but she did not listen. I once found her with the boy and asked him to leave my sister," Nafula stated.

Nafula also mentioned that the Form Four student had promised to end the relationship with Grace to focus on his studies. It is unclear what events transpired leading up to the tragic murder.

According to Navakholo Assistant Chief Steve Nawade, preliminary reports indicate that Grace was with the suspect shortly before her death. "The boy came for Grace from her bedroom at 4 a.m., and they walked towards the school, where she was murdered," Nawade explained. The suspect allegedly attacked Grace with a machete following a disagreement.

The suspect is currently in custody at Navakholo Police Station, where he is being held as investigations into the incident continue. The authorities are working to piece together the events that led to Grace's untimely demise.

The news of Grace's murder has sparked outrage and grief among Kenyans. Social media platforms are filled with condolences and expressions of sorrow. Shila Jelimo lamented, "I am tired of typing ‘rest in peace.’ What is going on in our country? The youth are dying everywhere." Mary Mariah simply wrote, "Rest in peace, neighbour." Angeline Nangila expressed her dismay at the apparent ease with which violence is committed, stating, "Life has become so simple nowadays. A man can visit his girlfriend at her home, and nothing happens."

Lucy Adhiambo Ochieng offered a reflection on the changing social landscape, particularly concerning relationships among students. She questioned the origins of student promiscuity and lamented the perceived decline in respect and discipline among young people. Ochieng also pointed to the challenges faced by those who attempt to intervene or discipline young people, noting the potential for backlash from parents.

This tragic incident in Navakholo echoes another recent case in Machakos county, where a man allegedly killed his girlfriend in a suspected love triangle. These incidents highlight the urgent need for addressing issues of violence, relationships, and social responsibility among young people in Kenya.
