Why was Solo: A Star Wars Story disliked?

Published 1 month ago9 minute read
I've given up hope of seeing John Boyega's Finn in Star Wars' new Jedi Order movie.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, John Boyega cast a negative light on black actors playing the "best friend" role when speaking about Star Wars and racism in Hollywood. Based on his recent comments and the actor's negative experience with how Finn's story worked out in the sequel trilogy, I can't see him coming back for the planned new Jedi Order movie that will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey. That is a shame, as the film could finally allow Boyega's Finn to become a Jedi, which I feel will never come to pass.

The teaser trailer for Ari Aster's Eddington is only one minute long, but it has already sold me.

The first teaser trailer for Ari Aster's Eddington has come out, and even though it is only one minute long, it has me on the edge of my seat waiting to see this film. The cast alone has me excited - Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler and Joaquin Phoenix all star - but the story is so intriguing and relatable, even if it might be a little too soon. Eddington follows a standoff between a small-town sheriff and a mayor during the COVID-19 pandemic. The trailer explains this through the use of social media, something that our society is addicted to. Just this little glimpse of the movie was enough to have me there on opening weekend.

Do you think a Fortnite movie could work?

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney recently shut down rumors that a Fortnite movie adaptation was in the works, but even still, that led me to begin wondering if one could work. Given how lacking in story the game is, it does feel like it'd be hard to craft a narrative that stays true to what fans love about it. That said, I also never thought the Minecraft movie would ever get off the ground, let alone be a major hit, so I could be wrong.

Which MCU Avenger would you love to see Sentry fight the most?

The Sentry is set to debut in the MCU this year with Marvel's Thunderbolts*,  including his darker personality known as The Void. One of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. I feel like a perfect match-up on screen would be if The Sentry went head-to-head with Thor at some point in the MCU's future, though fighting an OG rage-filled Hulk would be impressive as well.

Is The Amateur worth seeing in theaters?

Rami Malek's The Amateur is a spy thriller with a decent premise, but it suffers from a runtime that is far too long and several ridiculous moments that are just too unbelievable to work. That said, it offers up a lot of fun when it really leans into the thriller aspect of it all and Malek delivers a great performance. If you are big into spy movies, this one is likely worth the price of admission for you. If not, I recommend checking it out at home - but still checking it out!

Would you like to see a sequel to A Minecaft Movie?

While I'm definitely not jumping out of my seat for a sequel, I think there are a lot of possibilities for where this franchise could go. Rather than a direct continuation, I'd love to see a new Minecraft movie with the same visual effects but an entirely different cast and tone. If this year's version was meant to be one of the infinite stories that could be told in Minecraft, then the follow-up shouldn't be a cookie-cutter copy.

Who should Jon Hamm play in the MCU?

Jon Hamm recently spoke to ScreenRant, where he revealed that he still very much wants to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a comic book fan for all his life, Hamm previously came close to playing the X-Men villain Mister Sinister. The character is the perfect role for him in the MCU, as I believe Hamm could be allowed to let loose and make Mister Sinister a menacing foe with a flair for the dramatic like so many of his roles have been. If not him, I would love to see Jon Hamm as the MCU's Norman Osborn.

Is Todd McFarlane's casting choice for the DCU's Batman a good candidate?

Comic book legend Todd McFarlane has revealed that his choice for the Batman of James Gunn's DC Universe is Zachary Quinto. While I think the Star Trek movie star is a great actor, I can't see Quinto as Batman. I don't think he has the ability to look as imposing as the Dark Knight, nor could he portray the Batman and Bruce Wayne sides of the character better than some of the more popular names for the role. That said, I think Quinto could be a great Martian Manhunter or Brainiac in the DCU.

Should Lex Luthor wear his power armor in 2025's Superman?

Something that hasn't yet been seen from a live-action Lex Luthor is the character's classic green power armor from the comics. With that in mind, I'm wondering if the time has finally come to see the power armor on-screen with Nicholas Hoult's take on the character in this year's Superman. It could be really cool to see Lex bring driven to take the Man of Steel on directly.

Would you watch a Bryce Dallas Howard directed Fight of the Navigator reimagining?

In 2021, Disney announced that Bryce Dallas Howard would be directing a reimagining of Flight of the Navigator, but there has not really been an update since - until this week. Howard has revealed to Mama's Geeky that this film is "heading in a good direction", while also expressing her love for the movie and the characters. Her version was said to be female-led, but there are no other details. Considering that this is one of my favorite films from my childhood, I would love to have a new version - especially from someone who very clearly has such passion and excitement for the source material.

Who was the most fun character in A Minecraft Movie?

I was surprised by the humor in A Minecraft Movie, particularly from Jack Black and Jason Momoa. Jack Black, in particular, isn't always someone I enjoy, and I never got into the Jumanji  movies. However, it really seemed like he was allowed to run free with his personal style in this one, and his depiction of Steve was absurd and a ton of fun.

What was the best Easter Egg in A Minecraft Movie?

There were plenty of fun Minecraft Easter Eggs in the new movie, but I have to say the opening title sequence showing the classic "Generating world" screen felt soothing and nostalgic. The minecart rails and the water bucket release were fun for humor, but seeing the opening sequence with the classic Minecraft music playing brought a bit of childhood emotion.

Are you excited to see Captain Gantu in the live-action Lilo and Stitch remake?

While we haven't seen him in any of the trailers or promos, I hope we see the massive Captain Gantu in the live-action Lilo and Stitch movie. He was such a fun villain in the animated films and Disney Channel show, and it'd be great to see Kevin Michael Richardson reprise the role.

Could a Star Wars horror movie work?

If you've ever played Ewok Hunt on Star Wars Battlefront II, you'll know that horror in the Star Wars universe is certainly possible. Jokes aside, I think shifting up the tone in future films and trying to explore new corners of Star Wars is the best possible strategy to refresh fans after recent grievances. I'll always encourage letting creativity flow and trying new things.

Rick and Morty season 8 will drop on May 25, but has it been too long since season 7's ending?

The release date for Rick and Morty season 8 has now been confirmed as May 25, meaning we have less than two months before the new installment. Season 7 ended in December 2023, so it will have been an incredible 17 months since a new episode when season 8 starts in May. Seeing as the show is getting more and more confusing with every season, I wonder if viewers who don't rewatch the entire thing beforehand will struggle to remember what's happening. However, there were over two years between seasons 3 and 4, so it might not be a problem.

What is your biggest hope for Daredevil: Born Again's finale?

It's been confirmed that Punisher will return in Daredevil: Born Again's finale, presumably to finally team up with Matt Murdock against Mayor Fisk's Anti-Vigilante Task Force. I'm really looking forward to that, but I'm also hoping that we see Karen Page return, as well as a tease that Foggy Nelson's death might have been faked. I'd also love to see a tease that Daredevil might try to rally multiple vigilantes against Fisk in Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

Wyatt Russel as John Walker from his Thunderbolts character poster, with Tom Hardy's Venom exposing his teeth over his shoulder.
One Avengers: Doomsday Cast Member is Venom's Best Path Into The MCU

John Walker, the new Venom? The MCU may already be retelling USAgent's path to becoming a symbiote host, ahead of Thunderbolts and Avengers: Doomsday.

Do you think Below Deck Down Under’s Wihan Du Toit should be fired?

Although he’s been okay at being the bosun aboard Katina, Wihan Du Toit’s time on Below Deck Down Under should absolutely be coming to an end. Wihan’s been too relaxed and overwhelmingly calm about his crew, giving them very little direction and a difficult set of stakes with his leadership. Personally, I think Wihan should’ve been fired long before the case of mistaken identity in Johnny’s bunk, but now I think it’s a necessity for Captain Jason to let him go.

Should Black Mirror be compared to Severance?

Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker recently spoke about the fact he hasn't seen Severance because he'd be "jealous" and doesn't want to hear comparisons between the shows. I totally see the connection here, but at the same time, I don't think they can really be compared. Severance has an overarching story with the same characters, whereas Black Mirror is an anthology series. They're both powerful and brilliant, but I don't think it's fair to consider them in the same kind of way.

Should Peacemaker season 2 acknowledge the impact of James Gunn's Superman?

While I'm excited to see both of these projects, I'm really hoping there isn't much narrative fusion between them. I think a huge part of the DCU's early success will hinge on whether James Gunn lives up to his promise of different movies and shows having different tones. Peacemaker will be the Superman follow up, but I'd like it to remain relatively contained, mostly for the sake of swapping universes between seasons.
