The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and NGX Regulation Limited (NGX RegCo) have identified transparency and accountability in the financial markets as key drivers to attracting more investors both locally and internationally.

Speaking on Tuesday at the second edition ICAN-NGX RegCo Corporate Reporting Award in Lagos, the ICAN Diamond President, Davidson Alaribe, noted that a nation’s economy integrity depends on open and transparent corporate reporting.

The award evaluated and honoured Nigeria’s top 30 most capitalised listed companies based on financial reporting, corporate governance, and sustainability metrics.

Dangote Cement Plc won the Platinum award, MTN Nigeria took Gold, and Seplat Energy Plc secured Silver for outstanding performance across these criteria. Additional awards recognised category-specific leaders and the most improved company.

In his remarks, ICAN President said
the demand for corporate entities to disclose their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impact beyond the confines of traditional financial reporting has grown exponentially in recent years.

According to him, the shift reflects a global call for greater transparency, accountability, and sustainability in business practices.

“As we celebrate today, let us recommit ourselves to the pursuit of transparency, accountability, and sustainability values that will shape a stronger, more resilient future for Nigeria’s corporate landscape,” Alaribe said.

Alaribe praised NGX RegCo’s regulatory oversight, stating, “Your efforts remain a cornerstone of the market’s stability, and we applaud your unwavering pursuit of excellence in governance and regulation.”

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NGX RegCo, Olufemi Shobanjo, emphasised the importance of corporate reporting in strengthening the Nigerian financial market.

“We gather here today to celebrate excellence in corporate reporting, which is a cornerstone of transparency and accountability in our financial markets. Corporate reporting is not merely a regulatory requirement. It is a vital practice that builds trust among investors, stakeholders, and the broader community,” Shobanjo said.

He further noted that this year’s award recognises organisations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to best practices and corporate governance, enhancing their reputations and contributing to the integrity of the capital market.
