Finding an apartment that welcomes pets might seem easy at first glance, but for many renters, especially those with larger breeds, the process is anything but simple. According to Carson Hartzog of the Minnesota Star Tribune, many “pet-friendly” listings still come with strict breed and weight restrictions that can make it difficult for animal lovers to secure a new home.

Hartzog’s own experience with Freddie, a lovable pit bull mix, highlights a problem many renters face. Even sites like Zillow or Trulia let you search for “pet-friendly” places, but rarely allow filters for specific breeds — something that becomes critical when dealing with commonly banned types like pit bulls, German shepherds, or huskies. For those committed to rescuing or living with these misunderstood animals, it can mean weeks of extra searching or even settling for subpar housing.

Breed-specific Facebook groups and nonprofit tools like HousingLink can help find more accommodating landlords, especially those offering older homes with fewer restrictions. While newer complexes may offer flashy dog spas and parks, they often come with stricter pet policies, deposits, and monthly pet rents.

On top of that, moving long distances with pets adds another layer of complexity. Most airlines charge at least $100 per flight for in-cabin pets, and transporting larger animals in cargo can cost up to $600 — not to mention the stress involved. And once you arrive, expect to pay licensing fees, find a new vet, and keep your paperwork in order.

If you’re moving with pets, especially large or “restricted” breeds, do your research, ask questions early, and never try to sneak them in — it’s not worth the risk.

Loving animals means planning ahead. If we want a world that truly embraces all animals, we need to push for more inclusive pet policies and Support housing that reflects compassion over convenience.
