Major Power Outage Disrupts Spain and Portugal

Spain and Portugal have experienced widespread power outages, causing significant disruptions in major cities and affecting transport networks. The Spanish power grid operator, Red Eléctrica, confirmed the blackouts on Saturday, noting that the outage impacted the country’s “peninsular” system. Neighboring Portugal has also reported similar disruptions.
In Madrid, the power outages resulted in non-operational traffic lights and the evacuation of sections of the underground railway system. The disruption also led to the suspension of play at the Madrid Open tennis tournament, impacting players like British player Jacob Fearnley, who had to leave the court. The sudden loss of electricity also affected scoreboards and court cameras at the event.
Red Eléctrica announced that power was gradually being restored in the northern and southern regions of Spain, describing it as a “key step” towards achieving a full recovery. The company stated, “We continue working to restore power,” and indicated that all available resources were being used to resolve the issue.
In Portugal, police reported that traffic lights were out of service across the country, and metro services in Lisbon and Porto were suspended. Train services were also disrupted, leading to widespread travel chaos. Authorities and service operators in both Spain and Portugal are actively working to fully restore power and resume normal operations.
