Why Everton's Penalty Was Cancelled as Man United Salvage a Draw
However, after a lengthy VAR check referee Andy Madely cancelled the decision, handing the visitors a sigh of relief. Ashley Young went down after contact from Harry Maguire and the Premier League Match Centre explained.
"VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with an indirect free-kick."
Ruben Amorim's side were second best in the first half and were lucky it was only two goals.
In the second half, the introduction of Garnacho and Chido Obi lifted their spirits. Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte handed them a much-needed draw. Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure scored for David Moyes' side in the first half.

"Ashley Young diving, the Barclays is truly back."
@LibanLDN:
"A dive. Ashley Young forgetting he played for my club. I know who you are big bro."
@kay_mahapa
"That’s a vintage Ashley Young dive. Without VAR, he fools most referees and he used to do it regularly 🤣"
@EiFSoccer
"If Ashley Young just falls instead of acting like he got shot by a machine gun, it’s an obvious penalty. His fall was so theatrical. In those moments, the fine margins define games. Go down in a normal way and it’s given with no VAR possibility."
@Betalife09:
"Ashley Young has lost my respect and ruined his legacy as a former Manchester United player."
@TheSecretScout_
"If Ashley Young goes down normally he probably gets the pen. Instead he drops like he’s coming off the top rope like Triple H at the royal rumble 😂"
The Red Devils were expected to produce a much better performance than the one they showed at Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday.
They were poor from the first minute as Everton pressured every action, resulting in misplaced and hurried passes.
In the second half, Caesmiro was hooked and replaced by Garancho who brought some urgency. Bruno Fernandes and new signing Patrick Dorgu were the only bright spots in the match.
The draw leaves the Red Devils 15th in the table with 30 points. They face Ipswich and Fulham at Old Trafford next.
TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that Opta's supercomputer predicted the Europa League winner after the round of 16 draw.
Man United were given a 7.3% chance. Lazio, Athletic Bilbao, and Tottenham Hotspur are the top three favourites.
