Whoopi Goldberg would like to remind everyone that celebrity bodies don't belong to the public, in case you forgot.
The View moderator and her cohosts engaged in an impassioned Hot Topics discussion Tuesday morning, in response to a Glamour magazine article that, through the lens of awards season looks, examined "the phenomenon of fans who feel hurt when a star who spoke about body positivity in the past shows up on the red carpet looking good with dramatic weight loss," Goldberg said at the top of the show.
"It reminds me of when I have hit a lot of weights in my life because I eat my feelings. I at times have made jokes about my body and my husband once said to me, 'Sara, your body doesn't look the same as when you'd make those jokes, so I don't think it always lands.' But, the problem is that I'm the same on the inside, so why is that a disservice?" panelist Sara Haines observed. "Because a woman had called me out for not helping young girls, but I'm a young girl on the inside, I'm still struggling."
Sunny Hostin agreed with Joy Behar's assessment that the conversation is a heavily gendered one.
"It definitely is about being a woman. This cult of celebrity is always kind of interesting to me. Why look to a complete stranger for inspiration? You don't know what's going on in that person's life. Selena Gomez suffers from lupus. Weight is part of that condition," Hostin said, referencing the fact that the piece focused on Gomez and her recent appearance at the 2025 SAG Awards. "She may have lost this weight for her health condition," Hostin continued.
"But, it's none of your business," Goldberg cut in, prompting Hostin to repeat the sentiment in agreement. Goldberg continued: "Everybody makes their choice in life."
Cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin finished the conversation by calling red carpets "highlight reels" that often only focus on stars looking their best — which, in turn, "we look at" and "compare ourselves" to them.
"Everybody has their different struggles that they're dealing with. Body positivity was a really healthy movement, but there was a world in which you could almost go too far with that," she said, observing that people should do what's healthy and right for them instead of adhering to a standard.

Goldberg has long battled body-shaming critics in public, including during a 2022 episode of The View, where she hit back at a journalist who inadvertently criticized Goldberg's body by writing a review of the movie Till under the assumption that the Ghost star wore a fat suit during production.
"There was a young lady who writes for one of the magazines, and she was distracted by my fat suit, in her review," Goldberg said, seemingly referencing a line that Entertainment Weekly confirmed at the time had been deleted from The Daily Beast's review of the movie. "I don't really care how you felt about the movie, but you should know that was not a fat suit, that was me.... I assume you don't watch the show, or you would know that was not a fat suit."
Goldberg said it was "okay to not be a fan of a movie," but urged the writer to "leave people's looks out" of the criticism. "Just comment on the acting, and if you have a question, ask somebody. I'm sure you didn't mean to be demeaning," she finished.
The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
