When was the last weekend Syracuse didn't get some rain or snow? It's even longer than you think

That’s 26 weekends in a row in which some rain or snow fell at some point on Saturday and Sunday.

And this weekend is likely to be No. 27, with rain in the forecast Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

At least we’re not alone. Watertown, Albany and Saranac Lake have been in the same boat, so to speak. Other places no doubt had the same pattern, but aren’t official measuring sites for the weather service.

Western New York and the Southern Tier earlier this month benefitted from a weather pattern that kept them dry for a weekend while we remained in the clouds.

While Syracuse has seen some precipitation every weekend since before Thanksgiving, not all of them necessarily felt snowy or rainy. On Saturday, March 8, for example, just 0.06 inches fell, and most of that was before 6 a.m. On the other hand, the high temperature that day was just above freezing.

When will all the rain go away? Well, the good news is that clouds should break just in time for Memorial Day barbecues. Monday’s forecast calls for mostly clear skies and temperatures approaching 70 degrees. Not exactly beach weather, but just about normal for late May.

The odds of rain return Tuesday, but stay below 40% through at least Thursday. The weather service only issues forecasts for a week; after that, the accuracy falls sharply.

It’s felt extra gloomy lately because it’s spring -- on the calendar, anyway -- and we want to be outside after our first real winter in seveal years. But it’s been cool and rainy for the past two months.

Since April 1, Syracuse has had 22 days when at least some rain fell. A total of nearly 9 inches has fallen, about three months worth of typical rainfall.
