– premier It-girl, model, author, designer and (perhaps most importantly) former presenter of Pop World – has always been an impeccable dresser. That’s basically her whole thing. Think of Alexa Chung and you’ll probably immediately think “very good style”, such is her association with nailing fashion.

Hence why she’s on our summer outfit inspiration moodboard for 2025, and all the other years as well. Because – and this is another point – summer isn’t the easiest season to dress for. At least not at first. One moment you’re getting into the groove of a spring wardrobe, the next the temperature’s soaring and all of those knits and leather start to look not just uncomfortable, but actively sinister.

So, where do we start? And what outfit combos should we be opting for? According to Alexa, rule number one is that you needn’t be investing in something just because it’s on trend. “Sit out a trend if it doesn’t suit you,” she told us on her 40th birthday. Other tips? “Men’s socks are far superior to women’s socks”, and, “New accessories can revolutionise a tired wardrobe.” Here’s what to wear for summer according to Alexa Chung.

If you’re ever stumped for what to wear, just get a bunch of vintage camisoles and wear them as dresses. They look good with boots, they look good with flats and they’re actually comfortable during a heatwave. Alexa opted for a yellow cami for Glastonbury last year, paired with a raincoat and wellies “just in case”. You know what? She nailed it.

People have been doing a lot of imaginative things with silk scarves lately: wearing them around their heads, knotting them around their necks or, as with Alexa during a little jaunt through London earlier this month, tying them around the waist like a sort of miniskirt. What can I say? It looks good! Pair with a classic white T-shirt, dark denim and loafers for maximum nonchalance.

And here we have another pic from the Glastonbury archives – we are approaching festival season, after all. Denim booty riders might feel a little 2010s, but that’s part of their appeal (don’t we all want to look like Alexa Chung slouching around Glasto in the indie sleaze years?) And if you’re not sure what denim shorts to opt for, try coming at your least-worn jeans with a pair of scissors – it’s what Alexa does. “If the bottom of your jeans become too narrow/wide for whatever’s fashionable, cut them into shorts,” she says.

Cardigans might give off autumnal vibes, but not if you wear a thin one with nothing underneath, like Alexa on a night out in Paris. Pair with strappy point-toe pumps and a stiff denim skirt to complete the look. Also, as Alexa knows, some of the best summer outfits are comprised of just three items – nothing more, nothing less, not even a handbag. Speaking of ease…

While I’m more of a jeans and T-shirt girl myself, plenty of my colleagues swear by the one-and-done dress. That is: a statement-y dress that does everything. “That sense of ease is really what it boils down to, for me,” wrote Emily Chan earlier this year. “Quite frankly, I don’t have the time nor the brain space in the morning to think about pulling an outfit together.” Alexa is clearly a fan of The Big Dress also – she’s often pictured in a bold summer gown, looking like she’s on her way to a birthday party (her own). If it’s good enough for Alexa, etc.
