Watch as children of Lawoshime risk their lives through water to get to school
The start of the school day at Lawoshime is anything but ordinary.
Instead of heading straight to their classrooms, children must navigate through dangerous floodwaters just to receive an education.
Heavy rains the day before transformed the community into a watery maze, and with the usual canoes out of service, these young students have no choice but to put their safety at risk.
This isn't a one-time occurrence; it has become a yearly ritual.
Residents of the community are raising alarm bells, highlighting the dangers these children face during the rainy season, with the situation emphasizing the urgent need for better infrastructure and support at Lawoshime, where the simple act of going to school becomes an act of bravery.
"Schoolchildren in Lawoshime, a community in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, are forced to wade through floodwaters to attend school following heavy rains the previous day.
"According to reports, the canoes typically used to transport pupils and residents have fallen into disrepair, leaving the children with no option but to trek through the floodwaters, risking their safety in the process," a post by EDHUB on X, dated June 25, 2025, said.
It continued to state that, "The situation is said to be a recurring challenge during the rainy season, with residents expressing concern over the dangers schoolchildren face each year just to access education."
This situation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges many communities face and underscores the importance of ensuring children's safety and their right to education, regardless of the circumstances.
