Woman loses 59k in bid to get refund online
Pune: A woman (52) from Kalewadi lost Rs 59,000 to cybercrooks in an attempt to return a set of bangles she had ordered online in Feb.The woman filed an online complaint and after preliminary investigations, a case was registered with the Kalewadi police on Tuesday. An officer from the Kalewadi police said according to the complainant, she ordered a set of bangles from an e-commerce website in Jan. She did not like the bangles and placed a return request. "Until Feb 5, when no one from the company came to collect the bangles, and she did not get the refund, the woman searched the company's customer care number online. She called on the number and the person on the other end promised to process the return.
He told her that he would send his man to collect the parcel, but would initiate the refund process immediately," the officer said.
The man then told the woman to open her UPI account for the refund, the officer said, adding that when the woman objected to it, the person told her that it was the process and she would get her money immediately. The man also shared a website and told the woman to fill in her details. As soon as the woman opened her UPI, Rs 59,000 was siphoned from her bank account.
"The man told her the money came to his bank account by mistake.
When the woman told him to return her money, the man refused and stopped responding to the woman's calls," he said. The officer said the police investigations revealed that the money was transferred to a public sector bank's account. "Our investigations are ongoing," he said.
