Wamiqa Gabbi’s bold comment about Karan Johar and Bollywood stardom raises eyebrows on Reddit
ET Online
recently stirred up conversation online with a statement that many saw as a subtle dig at how stardom works in Bollywood. The actress, who has been gaining recognition for her performances, especially after the release of Bhool Chuk Maaf, echoed sentiments earlier expressed by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan about the support Alia has received from Karan Johar throughout her career. In a candid interaction with journalist Nayandeep Rakshit, Wamiqa was asked what she would like to "steal" from various Bollywood stars. When Alia Bhatt’s name came up, she did not hesitate to say, “Karan Johar.” She elaborated that having someone as influential, talented, and emotionally invested in one’s growth—like Johar has been for Alia—is a rare and valuable support system.

This comment immediately sparked online discussion, with many pointing out that her words reflect the same views shared by Aishwarya Rai in the past. In an old interview with Bollywood Hungama, Aishwarya had also acknowledged the steady and powerful backing Alia had received from Karan. She had said that such support created a solid foundation for Alia and gave her consistent access to high-profile work opportunities.

Wamiqa's remark drew strong reactions online. Many Reddit users praised her for her straightforwardness, especially in an industry where such observations are rarely voiced publicly. One user called her “Ash ki beti,” referring to her resemblance to Aishwarya Rai and applauding her boldness. Another user noted that Wamiqa joins a growing list of actresses, including Aishwarya, Kangana Ranaut, and Kriti Sanon, who have indirectly or directly acknowledged the advantages Alia has enjoyed under Karan Johar's mentorship.

Some even suggested that Alia might not appreciate the comment, interpreting it as a subtle criticism of her privileged rise. A few users added that Johar’s support had a major role in shaping her career, and such loyalty from a powerful figure was something most outsiders could only hope for.

Alongside the Karan Johar comment, Wamiqa also shared traits she admired in other actors. She mentioned wanting Ananya Panday’s flawless skin, Keerthy Suresh’s humility, Varun Dhawan’s high energy, Shah Rukh Khan’s legacy, Kriti Sanon’s tall frame, and Kiara Advani’s physique. These responses showed her light-hearted approach, but it was the Alia-Karan mention that drew the most attention.Wamiqa, who bears a resemblance to Aishwarya Rai and has often been noticed for her expressive eyes, has spoken about her own struggles in the industry. She once trained for Baahubali but was rejected before shooting began. She admitted that many of the early rejections were deserved, as she hadn't honed her craft properly back then. It was only after the pandemic that she committed herself more seriously to acting. While Alia is preparing for her next big project Alpha, part of the YRF Spy Universe, and also has Love & War with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal lined up, Wamiqa is moving forward with Rakt Brahmand: The Bloody Kingdom, a Netflix series.
