The nationwide protests, largely peaceful at the onset, have seen a heavy police presence, especially in Nairobi, where officers have fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators in several locations.
This comes despite earlier calls for restraint by both leaders and law enforcement.
Ahead of the June 25 memorial protests, police had warned participants against accessing protected areas, provoking officers, or interfering with private property, emphasising the importance of peaceful assembly.
However, tensions escalated in various streets.
A video surfaced online showing anti-riot police teargassing a medical camp in Nairobi.
The incident, which occurred in the midst of the demonstrations, triggered outrage among demonstrators and online users.
In the footage, visibly shocked medical personnel—including responders from St. John Ambulance—are seen scrambling for safety as tear gas canisters land near their tent.
In another widely circulated clip, a woman was seen bleeding from the mouth after being injured during the protests.
Fellow demonstrators quickly rushed to her aid, with medics providing emergency first aid and bandaging her wounds.
She was later placed on a motorcycle and ferried to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
"A police vehicle passed by near the GPO stage. The officers threw a teargas canister, and it hit a woman directly, tearing her mouth apart and knocking out her teeth. I helped her just to save her life, but shortly after, an ambulance came and rushed her to the hospital,” the boda boda rider recounted, describing the terrifying moment.
