VC urges FG to re-model Nigeria's educational curriculum
An appeal has gone to the Federal Government to remodel our educational systems in line with our developmental needs.
The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Highstone Global University (HGU), Texas, United States Professor Theophilus Aku Ugah, made this appeal in Lagos, recently, when he was officially introduced as the new Vice Chancellor.
The university, which is an online institution offering a range of academic programmes as stated by its management was specifically designed to serve Africans and Nigerians.
Ugah argued that globally, countries who have tailored their educational systems to local needs have gone far .
According to him,”It is so sad that Nigerians students preferred to tailor their research projects on what is going on in foreign countries rather than focusing their research on Nigeria and Africa .
He further noted that the university would lay emphasis on ethical principles and transparency in its administration.
His words: “As part of our leadership values, we recognise the importance of transparency, integrity and ethical behaviours in all our affairs.”
Ugah disclosed that subject to the approval of the Governing Council he intended to set up a 30-year development plans to monitor the performance index of the university from five,10,15 to 30 years.
Ugah believes with the implementation of this development plan, HGU “ will be among the best 100 universities in the whole world.”
The chairman of the occasion, a Professor of Educational Technology at the Lagos State University (LASU), Biodun Akinpelu, praised Ugah’s appointment describing it “as a significant milestone for Africa academia.
“It is an honour to be here today to celebrate an icon and a special blessing to Africa.Prof. Ugah is a great scholar and it is a victory for this university founded by a Nigerian thriving in the United States of America”
He disclosed that LASU contributed to Ugah’s academic journey, adding that,” Iam proud that LASU played a role in the making of this man.He will not only add value to global education but also bring an African perspective to academic leadership.
“ I have studied the university programs for over six years” Akinpelu praised the university for making it an online education noting that it offers a solution to Nigeria’s increasing educational needs.
“ I have been saying it for decades that traditional universites alone cannot solve our problems. The population is growing daily and online education the one offered by Highstone is likely to meet future needs”he added.
