UNC Women's Basketball advances to the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals
Nothing easy.
The tournament shirts that the UNC women's basketball program (along with the rest of the country) are repping are absolutely fitting, especially for Thursday morning's game in Greensboro.
North Carolina got off to a tremendous start, taking an 11-0 lead right out of the gate. With Alyssa Ustby back in the lineup, you could sense a new found energy from this group, as it appeared that the Tar Heels were on the verge of pulling away for good.
Well... Boston College had other plans.
The Eagles had plans of another comeback victory, following their thrilling win over Syracuse on Wednesday. Not only did Boston College eventually tie the game but eventually took as big as an 9 point lead with 8:15 left to play.
Although they dug themselves into a hole, the Tar Heels were able to crawl out of it.
North Carolina went on a 22-8 run to end the game, erasing their deficit to secure the victory. A Lexi Donarski three-pointer with 1:44 left to play felt like the final dagger in Boston College's second comeback attempt.
As we all already knew: the UNC women's basketball program is much better when No. 1 is on the floor. Her stat line wasn't typical of what we are used to seeing from her (11 points, six rebounds), but her presence and ability to make winning plays (such as the tip-out on the miss free throw late in the game) are things that the Tar Heels missed in her absence.
Donarski was outstanding in this game, scoring a game-high 20 points. She connected on five three-pointers and drained some clutch free throws down the stretch.
Indya Nivar put together an all-around performance, finishing with 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Lane Grant added 11 points in her 29 minutes of action off the bench.
While our stress levels are high, we'll all gladly take the win. Now, the Tar Heels have a quick turnaround when they meet up with Florida State in Friday's quarterfinals.
We all remember how the lone meeting between the two teams ended during the regular season. This group definitely is looking to earn some revenge in Greensboro.
