Missing ECG Containers Recovered, Linked to Indian National
Accra, [Current Date] – A significant development has emerged in the case of the missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, announced that 40 of the 1,300+ unaccounted-for containers have been located and secured by national security operatives and law enforcement agencies.
The recovery operation led authorities to a warehouse in Kpone, where the 40 containers were found. The facility is reportedly owned by an Indian businessman who has been taken into custody. According to Minister Jinapor, the businessman claims to have purchased the containers last year, a statement that is now the subject of an intensive investigation.
"The information I received this morning from National Security and law enforcement agencies is that they have already traced about 40 of the missing containers to a terminal or warehouse in Kpone, owned by an Indian businessman," Jinapor stated in an interview with TV3. "These containers have been confiscated and are being moved to a secure location."
The discovery comes in the wake of an investigative report revealing a massive discrepancy in the number of containers intended for clearance at the Tema Port. Initially, ECG reported 2,491 uncleared containers containing essential equipment like cables. However, an independent audit uncovered only 1,134 containers, leaving a staggering 1,347 unaccounted for, triggering a nationwide concern.
Minister Jinapor has vowed to pursue the matter vigorously, emphasizing that the government is committed to recovering all missing assets and prosecuting those responsible. "Authorities will trace and retrieve all the missing containers as soon as possible and bring the perpetrators before a competent court," he asserted. "Let me make it clear: when we begin prosecuting these individuals, no one should claim it is a witch hunt. These are state assets, and every legal means will be used to recover them and hold those responsible accountable. We will not relent in our efforts."
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are exploring all leads to locate the remaining containers and bring all involved parties to justice. The retrieval of these 40 containers marks a crucial step in uncovering the truth behind the disappearance of these vital state assets.
