UNC Basketball hosted San Diego State transfer Nick Boyd for a visit

Published 4 days ago2 minute read

How crazy things change in just a matter of a few short weeks.

After losing to the UNC basketball program in the NCAA Tournament First Four play-in game, Nick Boyd told reporters that "we'll be back," referring to him and his San Diego State Aztecs team.

However, two days later, Boyd entered his name into the transfer portal, and in a crazy turn of events, the team that ended his season is getting a visit from the standout guard.

Inside Carolina was the first to report that Boyd would be making a visit to Chapel Hill this weekend. The visit was expected to take place on Saturday.

Having lost Elliot Cadeau to the transfer portal, the UNC basketball program is in desperate need of some depth at the point guard position. Boyd is a player who could provide a veteran presence and stability, as he's a left-handed dominant player who can impact the game in a variety of ways.

Standing at 6-foot-3 while weighing 175 pounds, Boyd put together a strong season in what will likely be his only year at San Diego State. He finished the season averaging 13.4 points, 3.9 assists and 3.9 rebounds per-game, shooting the basketball at a 41.1% clip.

Boyd would be a temporary solution, given he only has one season of college eligibility remaining. However, in the current landscape of college basketball, the focus is on putting together the best roster for the upcoming season ahead, as future planning is starting to become more a thing of the past.

North Carolina, like everyone else in the country, is looking to be elite in during the 2025-2026 season. If a player (like Boyd) can help them win now, they'll take a chance on bringing him to Chapel Hill.

Imagine going back in time 10 years ago and having someone from the future tell you how the transfer portal works in 2025 along with details regarding how a player like Boyd is visiting the team who ended his season as a potential transfer target for that said program?

Most of us simply wouldn't have believed it.
