Raila Odinga Mourns Deceased Bodyguard, George Oduor

The death of George Oduor, the long-serving bodyguard of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has deeply affected the prominent Kenyan politician. Oduor, who passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Nairobi West Hospital after a short illness, had been a constant presence in Raila's life for nearly three decades, since 1994, serving as more than just a security detail but also as a trusted confidant and friend.

Oduor's dedication to the Odinga family began in the late 1980s when he served under Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Raila's father. Following Jaramogi's death in 1994, Oduor transitioned to Raila's security team, where he remained a steadfast presence until his own passing. His commitment was evident in a recently surfaced video showing him assisting Raila as they navigated a steep area, highlighting Oduor's ever-watchful and protective nature.

News of Oduor's death prompted an emotional response from Raila Odinga. Silas Jakakimba, a former aide to Raila, revealed that the former prime minister wept during a phone call upon hearing the news. Jakakimba, who spoke on behalf of the bereaved family, emphasized the depth of the bond between Raila and Oduor, noting that Oduor had been with Raila through numerous challenges, including enduring police brutality and tear gas during political rallies and anti-government protests.

Raila himself mourned Oduor's passing, describing him as a loyal and professional aide who had become an indispensable part of his family’s history. He extended heartfelt condolences to Oduor’s wife, Carol George, and his entire family, acknowledging Oduor's unwavering dedication to the Odinga family over the decades.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, of which Raila is a prominent leader, announced that George Oduor will be buried on Friday, April 11, 2025, at his home in Ndori, near Bondo. Condolence books have been opened at ODM’s headquarters at Chungwa House in Lavington, Nairobi, and at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF) offices in Upper Hill, Nairobi, allowing those who wish to pay their respects to do so.

The loss of George Oduor marks the end of an era for Raila Odinga, who has lost not only a bodyguard but also a trusted companion who stood by him through thick and thin. His absence will undoubtedly be felt deeply by the Odinga family and the wider political community.
