Passengers Injured as LAGFERRY Vessel Bursts into Flames in Lagos

A fire erupted on a Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) boat at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu on Thursday morning, causing panic and injuries. The vessel, named "Igbega Eko," was en route to Victoria Island when the incident occurred at approximately 6:45 AM.

Sources indicated that a significant explosion originated from the boat's engine, leading to a rapidly spreading fire that engulfed the vessel and trapped some passengers. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed the incident, stating that emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. LASWA coordinated with LAGFERRY, boat operators, and first responders to manage the situation. According to LASWA, all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated. However, four passengers sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

LASWA is conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire, working with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive assessment. The agency emphasized that safety remains its top priority and that it is committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures on Lagos waterways. LASWA also assured the public that all safety protocols are intact and that ferry operations are proceeding as scheduled, encouraging passengers to adhere to safety guidelines.

In a later update, LASWA reported that nine individuals, including passengers, LASWA personnel, and LAGFERRY staff, are receiving medical attention and showing significant improvement. Six of these individuals are under care at the General Hospital in Ikorodu, while the remaining three are receiving treatment at a private hospital. No life-threatening conditions have been reported.

LASWA's General Manager, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, stated that the agency is fully committed to supporting the injured individuals and their families during this time. He also reiterated that a comprehensive safety review is underway to prevent similar incidents in the future. Mr. Emmanuel commended the swift response of emergency services and acknowledged the public’s cooperation during the event.
