Legal Adviser of the Judicial Board of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC), Gideon Agyapong, has explained that the ongoing review of the student union’s constitution is in accordance with a directive from the Dean of Students.

In a statement dated June 19, the UGSRC Judicial Board announced a hearing to review the constitution.

This action follows a directive from the Dean of Student Affairs, aimed at aligning student governance documents with university policies and current realities.

Speaking to Univers News, Gideon stated that the review is part of efforts to ensure transparency and accountability within the SRC’s operations.

“The review is in response to the Dean of Students’ directive to ensure student unions’ constitutions reflect university policies and changing circumstances,” he said.

He further noted that the Dean of Students has called for improved financial oversight within the SRC.

“The Dean of Students has directed that there should be more transparency and accountability in respect of the financial management of the SRC,” he noted.

He further explained that the review will also address outdated provisions, discriminatory clauses, and clerical errors in the constitution, check reforms on election financing, and campaign regulations, such as spending limits, will be considered.

“These reforms aim to improve transparency and reduce the possibility of corruption and financial mismanagement,” he added.
